Nestled between towering rock faces and high-mountain scenery, on the border between the Lleida and Huesca Pyrenees, this reservoir offers a current-free environment perfect for first-time kayakers or for a shared family activity.
The activity opens with a brief explanation from the certified guide covering the basic paddle strokes and safety rules. We venture into the Congost d'Aulet (formerly known as Congost del Borrugat), a canyon formed by the Noguera Ribagorçana river cutting through the mountains. Along one hillside you will spot caves and nesting sites of birds of prey — eagles, griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures and bearded vultures — as you glide across the turquoise, transparent water of the reservoir.
Throughout the crossing, the guide interprets the natural and geological environment. Depending on the water level, it may be possible to see the remains of old infrastructure and spots barely reachable from land: the ruins of the village of Aulet and the Monastery of Santa Maria de Lavaix.

Obarra Canyon from Pont de Suert: rope-free canyoning in the Ribagorza
El Pont de Suert, Lleida
The Obarra canyon is a rope-free water descent and one of the few in the Pyrenees where an 11th-century Lombard Romanesque monastery marks the exit of the gorge. Highly aquatic with natural slides, pools and sheer limestone walls sculpted by the Isábena river in the heart of the Ribagorza.
For those who want water, commitment and heritage all in the same descent.
- Water canyon — no abseils, no ropes from age 10
- Monastery of Santa María de Obarra as the end point
- 4 hours in the Isábena Gorge — Ribagorza
📍 Meeting point: Carrer Aragó, s/n, 25520 El Pont de Suert, Lleida, Spain – View on map
Obarra Canyon: a water descent through the spectacular Isábena Gorge
The Obarra canyon descent begins close to an 11th-century Romanesque monastery. The Monastery of Santa María de Obarra, deep in Aragonese Ribagorza, receives the group before anyone touches the water: a Lombard basilica plan, ashlar stonework and a rock shelter that closes the valley like an antechamber to the gorge. It is the only rope-free water canyon near Pont de Suert and one of the few Pyrenean descents where Romanesque heritage is part of the route — not just the brochure.
The day starts at the RocRoi base in Pont de Suert. The licensed guide hands out the two-piece wetsuit, helmet and neoprene shoes — no harness or rope required — and the briefing focuses on what makes this descent unique: water safety, slide technique and the real physical commitment of the four hours ahead. Once in the riverbed, the Isábena sets the pace: limestone carved over centuries, chained natural slides, back-to-back pools deep enough to swim and passages between rocks. A bearded vulture glides overhead as the group works through the Obarra Gorge.
The climax comes as the gorge opens out on the final stretch, already within sight of the Monastery of Santa María de Obarra. The group finishes soaked, legs tired and with the quiet certainty of having completed a canyon almost nobody does. One more monastery in the memory.
What the experience feels like
Families: a natural waterpark designed for families with children from age 10.
Couples: four hours of water canyon in the Isábena. No abseils, no technical stops — water, limestone and the outline of the monastery to open and close the day.
Groups of friends: the long canyon for groups who have already done a descent and want pure water without going back to abseiling. Chained slides, optional jumps and the challenge of completing the entire gorge.
What is included in the RocRoi experience?
- Full technical equipment: two-piece wetsuit, CE-approved helmet, neoprene shoes
- Licensed guide (TD2 qualified canyoning instructor)
- Accident insurance
- Civil liability insurance
- Not included: transport from the base to the canyon start. Participants follow the guide's car in their own vehicle. If you do not have a vehicle, contact us before booking.
- Cancellation Policy: Up to 5 days before: full refund. Up to 48 hours before: change the date or switch to an «ADVENTURE voucher».
What to bring – Obarra Canyon
For your comfort and safety, we recommend bringing:
- Swimwear
- Thermal base layer or lycra (worn under the wetsuit)
- Lace-up sports shoes that can get wet, with a good sole (no flip-flops or open footwear)
- A change of shoes for after the activity
- Water and a snack for 4 hours of activity
- Towel and a change of clothes
Practical details – Obarra Canyon
There are no abseils or vertical ropes, but there is 1h30 of sustained physical effort in the water with no exit points along the route. Swimming ability is mandatory. Jumps are never compulsory.
- Minimum age: 10 years with a responsible adult / 18 years without a companion.
- Total duration: approximately 4 hours (1h30 in the canyon, the rest for kit-up and approach).
- Physical condition: swimming ability required. Not recommended for pregnant women, people with heart conditions, serious medical issues or vertigo. Not accessible for wheelchair users.
- Attitude: sustained willingness to be in the water, group spirit to complete the descent and an alert mind to appreciate the Lombard Romanesque architecture before getting wet.
FAQs
What obstacles are there in the Obarra canyon? Are there any abseils?
No abseils. The descent is pure water canyoning: chained natural slides, passages between rocks and pools deep enough to swim, designed for those who want a long day of water without abseiling technique. Optional jumps into pools can always be bypassed by an alternative route.
What is the difference between the Obarra canyon and the Viu Superior?
The Viu Superior is a short canyon with one 6-metre abseil in the Pre-Pyrenean limestone of Lleida. Obarra has no abseils, runs in Aragón and starts beneath an 11th-century Romanesque monastery. If you want a canyon with abseiling, go for Viu Superior. If you want a long aquatic descent with heritage, Obarra is the one.
Can you do the Obarra canyon with no previous canyoning experience?
It is Level 2 Beginner–Intermediate. The technique is accessible (no abseils), but the sustained physical commitment and absence of exit points mean we recommend at least one prior aquatic canyon experience. If this would be your very first descent, a shorter canyon is a better starting point.
What should I know about the Monastery of Santa María de Obarra before visiting?
It is an 11th-century Lombard Romanesque Benedictine monastery, listed as a Site of Cultural Interest. It stands at the natural entrance to the Obarra Gorge in the Isábena valley, and the approach to the water passes right by its walls. It is worth arriving a few minutes early to take it in before pulling on your wetsuit.
Is transport to the canyon included in the price?
No. The drive from the Pont de Suert base to the canyon start is in your own vehicle, following the guide's car. If you do not have a vehicle, contact us before booking to discuss options.

The beginner via ferrata experience in the Pyrenees
The via ferrata at Tossal de Miravet in its K2-K3 version is the most accessible and best-equipped route in the area for anyone approaching the world of via ferrata for the first time. Located in Pont de Suert, right in the heart of the Alta Ribagorça and just a few kilometres from the Vall de Boí, it combines a progressive climb on rock with open views over the Pyrenean valley and a level of difficulty that is entirely manageable for the whole family.
The day starts at the RocRoi ECEM base, where the team welcomes you, fits you with an approved harness, energy absorber and helmet, and delivers a clear, jargon-free safety briefing. The guide explains how to use the equipment, how to progress along the cable and what to do in any unexpected situation. Before you put your first foot on the rock, you already feel ready.
On the route, the K2-K3 itinerary is designed to build confidence section by section. The ascent is gradual: you start on comfortable terrain, gain height calmly and the guide matches the pace to each participant.
Younger participants and people who have never done a via ferrata discover that rock does not intimidate when you have the right support and a trusted companion beside you. The views over the Pyrenees from the highest points of the route are the natural reward for every effort made.
After 2 hours on the route, the descent and return to base close a day that, for many, marks the beginning of something new: a taste for moving vertically, for the mountains in their most authentic state. RocRoi guides have been accompanying first timers for over 30 years, and it shows in every gesture.

Families: watching your children grip the rungs with determination and climb the rock with a smile is one of those moments you never forget — an activity that builds confidence and the spirit of achievement from age 8.
Couples: discovering something new together in the Pyrenees, moving at your own pace and celebrating each section as a shared milestone turns this via ferrata into much more than a hike.
Groups of friends: the moment someone in the group conquers the section that had them worried, and the whole crew cheers them on — that is exactly what defines a weekend in the Pyrenees.

FAQs
Is the via ferrata safe if I have never done one before?
Yes. At all times you will be attached to the safety cable using an approved harness and energy absorber. The RocRoi certified guide delivers a full briefing before you set off and accompanies you throughout the K2-K3 route. This activity is designed precisely for people with no prior experience.
Can children take part? From what age?
Yes. This beginner via ferrata is designed for the whole family: children can take part from age 8 accompanied by a responsible adult. The guide adapts the pace to the group's level and manages the activity so that younger participants enjoy the experience in complete safety.

If you are unsure which to choose, contact us before booking.

No problem at all. The guide knows the route and can arrange a safe exit for the group if anyone needs to stop for any reason. The comfort and safety of all participants is always the priority.

The via ferrata experience at the Tossal de Miravet in the Pyrenees
The via ferrata at the Tossal de Miravet, in Pont de Suert, is one of the most complete and well-equipped routes in the Catalan Pyrenees. Rated K4 with three distinct sections, it offers a progressive route that combines real exposure, manageable technical difficulty and authentic mountain scenery, right in the heart of the Alta Ribagorça, just a short distance from the Vall de Boí.
The activity starts at the RocRoi ECEM base, where the team hands out the technical gear: certified harness, energy absorber, zip-line pulley and helmet. The guide runs a detailed briefing covering progression technique, how to use the energy absorber and how to move through the most exposed sections. From the very start you feel accompanied, not just supervised.
On the rock face, the three sections follow a logical, well-paced sequence: the first builds confidence, the second demands more physical commitment and decision-making, and the third tests your head as much as your arms. The vertical sections are well equipped with steel cables and metal footholds, and at all times escape routes are available should you need to stop the ascent.
The finale comes from the top: a zip line that brings you back to earth with controlled adrenaline and the satisfaction of having completed something genuinely worthwhile. After the descent, the team guides you back to the base to round off the day in style.
What the experience feels like
Families: an adventure that pushes everyone safely out of their comfort zone, with shared moments of achievement that stay with you far longer than any photo.

FAQs
What is the difficulty level of the Tossal de Miravet via ferrata?
It is an intermediate K4 via ferrata with three progressive sections. It requires reasonable fitness and the absence of severe vertigo, but no prior technical experience is needed: the RocRoi guide explains the progression technique at the start and accompanies the group on every section. It is demanding at times, but entirely achievable for an active person.
Are there escape routes if I need to stop before finishing?
Yes. The route has escape paths that allow you to descend safely if anyone needs to leave the route due to tiredness, fear or any other reason. The guide knows all the access points and will make the most appropriate decision based on the group's situation.
Is the activity safe if it is my first via ferrata?
Yes, provided you have normal fitness and do not suffer from intense vertigo. You will be clipped to the safety cable at all times via a certified harness and energy absorber. The RocRoi qualified guide supervises every section and adapts the pace to the group's level.
Can teenagers or young people from age 12 take part?
Yes, from age 12 accompanied by a responsible adult. The activity is physically demanding, so the fitness of the minor is taken into account and the supervision of both the guide and the accompanying adult is always in place.
What happens if the weather conditions are bad on the day?
Safety comes first. If conditions do not allow the activity to be carried out safely, RocRoi will communicate this as early as possible and offer an alternative: a date change, an equivalent activity or a refund in accordance with the current cancellation policy.

Via Ferrata Croqueta de Obarra Level K4 in Obarra: Pont de Suert, Pyrenees
El Pont de Suert, Lleida
Itinerary
With a long route and excellent equipment, a unique climbing experience awaits you.First section: Vertical Wall and Natural Holds
Your adventure begins with a first section that runs along a wall where vertical areas alternate with rock holds. This initial section is perfect for warming up and adapting to the environment. After overcoming these first difficulties, you will continue on easier terrain until you reach a wide strip from where you will walk to the start of the second section. Here, you will have climbed approximately 100 metres.Second Section: Verticality and Tibetan Bridge
The second section is even more exciting, with very vertical, well-equipped terrain that follows a beautiful wall with the occasional overhanging step. You will use natural rock holds, which adds an authentic touch to the climb. You will reach the first Tibetan bridge, a thrilling experience in itself. Once over the bridge, you will reach the top of a spire at an altitude of 1,333 metres, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views.Third Section: Ridge and Aerial Spur
The third section of the via ferrata continues along an edge and descends a dihedral of about 10 metres. You will then cross a vira to reach the second bridge. After crossing it, you will progress along an aerial and vertiginous spur at the Aguja de la Croqueta. This section takes you to an aerial traverse that brings you to the third bridge, equipped with hand and foot ropes. Finally, you will overcome the last wall, which is somewhat easier, and reach the top of the Aguja de la Croqueta de Obarra, at an altitude of 1,396 metres.Equipment and Safety
To enjoy this via ferrata in complete safety, make sure you have the right equipment: helmet, harness, energy dissipater and gloves. The 2-Day Water Pack Experience in the Pyrenees
The Noguera Ribagorçana river cuts through the central Pyrenees from north to south, and this two-day pack lets you experience it in its two most contrasting states: peaceful and powerful.
On one of the two days, the Escales Reservoir awaits you, between El Pont de Suert (Lleida) and Bonansa (Huesca). You will step into a stable kayak, your guide will cover the basics in just a few minutes, and from there you paddle at your own pace across perfectly calm water. The scenery does the rest: vertical walls over 500 metres high, the Congost de l'Aulet gorge, clear turquoise water, birds of prey nesting in the rock and, if water levels allow, the submerged ruins of the village of Aulet.
The other day, you take on the river. Rafting on the Noguera Ribagorçana near El Pont de Suert is the complete opposite: a raft, paddles, current and the first rapids of the Catalan Pyrenees. The RocRoi team kits you out, briefs you and leads you on a 1h30 descent, with dynamic sections, rest stops and optional jumps for those who want more.
One experience across two consecutive days, with the water and the Pyrenees centre stage. It never quite repeats itself!
What the experience feels like
Families: the calm kayaking hooks the little ones from the first stroke; the rafting reminds them the Pyrenees can also push back. Two perfect days to share from age 6.
Couples: paddling together in silence on day one and laughing together in the rapids on day two. Few getaways combine calm and excitement this well in a single weekend.
Groups of friends: the kayak invites exploration and the rafting sparks competition. Two days, two completely different experiences for a group that wants more than a single activity.
What is included in your RocRoi experience?
Day 1 – Kayak on the Escales Reservoir:

Yes. Kayaking on the Escales Reservoir is suitable from age 6 with an adult, and rafting from age 5–6 depending on water levels. It is one of the most family-friendly packs in the Pyrenees.

Viu Superior Canyon – Beginner Canyoning in Pont de Suert
El Pont de Suert, Lleida
Viu Superior is the first "yes" to canyoning: a short, lively route with no filler in the heart of Alta Ribagorça. Natural slides, narrow limestone corridors and a six-metre abseil nobody forgets.
The water is crystal clear and warmer than usual thanks to the limestone rock and sun exposure. The bright setting makes it stand out from the first obstacle.
- Level 2: Beginner — from age 8 with an accompanying adult
- 1h30 in the canyon · 4h total duration
- Bright limestone · crystal-clear water · 6-metre abseil
📍 Meeting point: ECEM – RocRoi Escola de Muntanya i Aventura, Carrer Aragó, s/n, 25520 El Pont de Suert, Lleida, Spain – View on map
The Barranco Viu Superior experience
Viu Superior canyon makes sense with your feet in the water. In Alta Ribagorça, canyoning has this character: blue-grey limestone, polished by centuries of current, tells you everything you need to know from the first contact. It is not a water walk and not a demanding technical challenge. It is the balance people need when trying this sport for the first time.
The activity starts at the RocRoi centre in Pont de Suert. Your qualified guide hands out the equipment — wetsuit, helmet, harness — and gives a clear, direct briefing before the twenty-minute approach to the riverbed: abseiling technique, body position on natural slides and the protocol if you want to avoid a jump. The upper section moves through narrow corridors where the limestone walls almost meet above your head. Natural slides come one after another in short sections, with crystal-clear pools that stand out for their temperature: sun exposure and limestone rock make Viu Superior one of the warmest canyons in the Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida.
The high point is the six-metre abseil. Not a huge waterfall, but enough: vertical limestone, the sound of water below and the rope as your only fixed point. That is the image that closes the upper section of Viu de Llevata. The thirty-minute walk back to Pont de Suert always comes too soon.
What the experience feels like
Families: the natural slides do the work for you. The six-metre abseil turns any eight-year-old into the hero of the afternoon, and the parents into the best planners of the summer in Alta Ribagorça.
Couples: bright limestone, crystal-clear water and a route that feels too short when you are in good company. The upper section of Viu has something hard to find in other canyons in Lleida: beauty without effort.
Groups of friends: fast pace, optional jumps and natural slides nobody gets through without laughing out loud. A descent designed to make your afternoon in Pont de Suert memorable.
What is included in the RocRoi experience?
- Full technical equipment: wetsuit, helmet, harness, neoprene socks
- Qualified guide
- Free parking
- Accident insurance
- Public liability insurance
- Cancellation policy: Up to 5 days before we give you a full refund; up to 48 hours before you can change the date or switch to an «ADVENTURE voucher».

For your comfort and safety, we recommend you bring:
- Swimsuit
- Closed sports shoes that can get wet (with good grip)
- Rash vest or thermal top under the wetsuit

Practical details – Barranco Viu Superior

FAQs
How high is the abseil in Barranco Viu Superior?
The route includes an easy abseil of around six metres on limestone. No previous experience is required: your qualified guide supports each participant at all times. It is one of the most valued obstacles for people doing their first descent in Alta Ribagorça.
Is it suitable for young people with no previous experience?
Yes. The upper section of Viu de Llevata is designed to be a first time for many people. The obstacles are progressive, the difficulty is low to moderate and the guide adapts the pace to the group. You do not need previous technique or a special fitness level: just the motivation to do it.
Can children come with their parents?
From age eight with an accompanying adult. It is one of the most accessible canyons for families in Alta Ribagorça: the water is not excessively cold, the technical difficulty is low and every obstacle has an alternative for anyone who does not want to jump.
What is the difference between Viu Superior and Canyoning in Viu de Llevata?
Viu Superior is the upper section of the canyon: shorter (1h30 in the canyon), more family-friendly and with lower technical demand, ideal from age 8 with an accompanying adult. Canyoning in Viu de Llevata is the full route, longer and with a faster pace. Both share the same bright limestone, but they suit different profiles. If it is your first time, start with the upper section.
Does the price include all the equipment?
Yes. The price includes a full wetsuit, helmet, harness, neoprene socks, qualified guide, free parking, accident insurance and public liability insurance. You only need a swimsuit, sports shoes that can get wet and a rash vest or thermal top.

Family Pack Pont de Suert: 4 days in the Pyrenees from a single base
The Family Pack Pont de Suert brings together four key adventures in Alta Ribagorça over four days, departing from the RocRoi ECEM base in the heart of Pont de Suert. It is designed for families who want to experience the Catalan and Aragonese Pyrenees at their most accessible — without changing hotel and at the pace each group needs.
Day one starts with rafting on the Noguera Ribagorzana. After the briefing and kit-up at the base, the family is on the water ten minutes from the centre. Day two heads to Río Blanco, in the Isábena valley: a sunny, open canyon at discovery level where children from age eight with an adult enjoy small water passages and bright pools. Day three, the family meets the rock face on the K2-K3 via ferrata on Tossal de Miravet — certified harness, energy-absorbing lanyard and helmet, clear briefing and a progressive ascent with open views over the Parc Nacional d'Aigüestortes.
The highlight arrives on day four, paddling through the Escales Reservoir. The route enters the Congost d'Aulet, where walls of more than 500 metres drop sheer into turquoise, transparent water. Raptors' nests appear, along with the ruins of the old village of Aulet and the Monastery of Santa Maria de Lavaix. Four days — and the last one leaves the image that comes home with you.
Note: For organisational reasons, the order of activities may vary. The team will let you know in advance.
What the experience feels like
Families: four progressive adventures from a single base — rafting, canyoning, rock and kayak — suitable from age 8 with an adult and adapted to every group's pace. FAQs
How are the 4 days organised and who arranges the itinerary?
The pack is designed as one activity per day over four days, ideal for a long weekend or a week's holiday. After booking, the RocRoi Booking team will contact you to confirm the schedule based on family preferences, ages and daily conditions. The order may vary for organisational reasons and will be communicated in advance.
Can we fit two activities into the same day?
Yes, provided logistics and conditions allow it. Note it in your booking observations (for example, Río Blanco canyon in the morning and via ferrata in the afternoon) and the centre will confirm feasibility before finalising the itinerary.
From what age can children take part?
The minimum age for the full pack is 8 years old with an accompanying adult, set by the Tossal de Miravet via ferrata. The other activities accept younger children if booked separately. Under-18s must always be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Is previous experience required for any of the 4 activities?
No. All 4 activities are at Discovery or Beginner level, with full briefing, certified equipment and a qualified guide. The pack is designed as a first introduction to each discipline.
Are accommodation and meals included?
No. The pack includes all 4 guided activities with full technical equipment and insurance, but not accommodation or meals. The team can recommend family-friendly accommodation in Pont de Suert and the Vall de Boí.
