The equestrian trail experience through the Alt Pirineu

The Alt Pirineu Natural Park, on the southern slopes of the Pallars Sobirà, is one of the best-preserved natural spaces in Catalonia. The route begins at the meeting point in Rialp, where the qualified guide welcomes you, introduces you to the horses and runs through a basic briefing: how to mount, how to communicate with the animal and how to keep your balance on the trail. No riding experience is necessary — the horses are gentle and the route is designed for first-timers.

During the one-hour ride you will follow horseshoe trails through mixed forests of black pine and fir, with the river alongside and the pre-Pyrenean peaks as a backdrop. The pace is slow and deliberate: the goal is not to reach a destination, but to take in the landscape, the quiet and the feeling of moving at a pace the mountains have kept for centuries.

The guide stays with the group throughout, adapting the route and rhythm to the participants. When you finish, you return to the starting point where free parking is available.

Horse Riding in Rialp 2 h: Equestrian Ride in the Alt Pirineu (Family)

Horse Riding in Rialp 2 h: Equestrian Ride in the Alt Pirineu (Family)

Rialp, Lleida

The Alt Pirineu is not told — it is lived. And on horseback, over a full two hours, there is time to enter its forests for real, cross the river and breathe the rhythm of the Pallars Sobirà. A family-friendly and accessible experience — no previous experience needed — designed for those who want more than a short ride.

Setting off from Rialp with a qualified instructor, helmet included and horses prepared for beginners. The landscape does the rest.

  • Level 1 — Discovery, suitable from age 7 with an accompanying adult
  • 2 hours on horseback in the Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu
  • Qualified instructor, pre-ride instructions and helmet included

The experience: 2 hours on horseback in the Alt Pirineu

The Parc Natural de l'Alt Pirineu, on the southern slopes of the Pallars Sobirà, is one of the best-preserved areas in Catalonia. And with two hours on horseback, there is time to enter it: forests, nearby valleys and the Noguera Pallaresa always close by, sometimes alongside the trail and other times crossed at a ford.

The route starts at the Rialp meeting point. The qualified instructor welcomes the group, introduces the horses and runs a basic instruction session: how to mount, how to hold the reins, how to communicate with the animal. No previous experience is needed. The horses are used to people riding for the first time and know the way. If you wish, you can visit the stables before setting off.

Once on the trail, the route follows forest tracks, traditional bridle paths and small valleys in the area. The pace is unhurried, at a walk. And because there is time, the instructor can suggest a gentle trot or short stops where the river opens out. Younger children eager to ride also have access to an enclosed area for a first controlled introduction to the horses.

The feeling at the end of two hours is not of having gone for a stroll — it is of having covered a stretch of the Pyrenees. The return to the starting point comes with the group closer together, the horses calm and the image of the Noguera Pallaresa still nearby.

What the experience feels like

Families: a first horse ride with real time to enter the forest and cross the river. From age 7 with an accompanying adult, helmet included and qualified instructor at the head of the group.

Couples: a slow escape in the Alt Pirineu. Two hours at a walk through the Pallars Sobirà valleys — the opposite of a packed Pyrenean schedule.

Groups of friends: a different way to experience the Pyrenees, with no adrenaline and conversation on horseback. Ideal as a counterpoint to a day of rafting or canyoning in Llavorsí.

Premium / exclusivity: a peaceful experience in one of Catalonia's purest natural parks, far from the crowds.

FAQs

What is the difference from the 1-hour horse ride?

The 2-hour ride allows you to travel further from the starting point and truly enter the Pallars Sobirà valleys: forest tracks, crossings or edges of the Noguera Pallaresa and areas that one hour cannot reach. The level is the same (Discovery, suitable for beginners), but the route is more complete and gives more time to enjoy the scenery at horse pace.

Do I need previous riding experience?

No. The route is designed for complete beginners. Before setting off, the qualified instructor runs a basic instruction session — how to mount, how to hold the reins, how to steer the horse — and accompanies you throughout. The horses are used to first-time riders.

From what age can children take part?

From age 7 with an accompanying adult, at the instructor's discretion based on the child's height and independence. Unaccompanied, the minimum age is 18. For younger children eager to ride, we have an enclosed area for a first controlled introduction to the horses.

What clothing and equipment should I bring?

Long trousers and closed-toe sports shoes are essential for safety. RocRoi provides the helmet. Add sunscreen, a cap, sunglasses with strap and water. If it's cool, a light jacket — we are in the Alt Pirineu.

What route will we follow during the 2 hours?

Routes run through nearby valleys, forest tracks and traditional bridle paths that cross or skirt the Noguera Pallaresa. The main pace is a walk; if the group is comfortable, the instructor may suggest a gentle trot on some sections. The route adapts to the group's profile.
