Catamaran

A catamaran is a multihulled vessel with two parallel hulls of equal size. Catamarans have higher maximum speeds than monohull boats, as they are in less contact with the water. They can run in moderate as well as in extreme winds. In our activity center we have a Hobie Dragoon catamaran and a Hobie 15 catamaran. We normally use Hobie 15 catamaran for our sailing courses. It fits four people and it can also be rented out.

Catamaran Adrenaline Trip in Vilanova i la Geltrú

Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona

The Hobie Cat-style catamaran heels over. One hull lifts off the water. And the Garbí, the Garraf's thermal wind, pushes you to a speed you did not see coming.

You do not need any sailing experience. The instructor handles all the manoeuvres while you feel the catamaran fly past the cliffs of the Garraf Natural Park.

  • Level 1 – Discovery: no prior experience needed
  • Guided trip: instructor on board at all times
  • Real speed on the Mediterranean with the Garbí wind

The experience – Catamaran Adrenaline Trip on the Garraf Coast

You are not here to learn sailing. You are here to feel it. The Catamaran Adrenaline Trip is for anyone who arrives in Vilanova looking for speed, not theory. The instructor takes the controls, finds the optimal upwind angle and, when the Garbí — the south-westerly thermal breeze that blows from June to September at 8–15 knots — really kicks in, the Hobie Cat lifts off: one hull out of the water, the other skimming the Mediterranean, and you on board.

If conditions allow, we will sail on the trapeze. If you want to get involved, the instructor walks you through the basics of trimming and steering on the go — not as a lesson, but as part of the experience. We will cruise the Vilanova coastline with the white cliffs of the Garraf Natural Park to port, a stretch of coast that only looks like this from the water.

Vilanova i la Geltrú is 45 km from Barcelona and 35 km from El Prat Airport. Direct train from Sants in 55 minutes. Changing rooms and showers at the base when you finish.

What the experience feels like

Groups of friends: turns on board, real wind and the feeling of having properly sailed. The best beach plan 40 minutes from Barcelona.

FAQs

Do I need any sailing knowledge for this trip?

No. The instructor handles all the manoeuvres. You enjoy the speed and, if you want to get involved, they will walk you through the basics as you go. This is not a lesson — it is an experience.

How much adrenaline should I expect?

This activity is designed to make you feel the true force of the wind. We push for maximum speed within safe conditions, sailing on the trapeze when the Garbí allows it. Pure technical adrenaline on the water — perfect for anyone who wants to experience dinghy sailing at its most exhilarating.

What is the best time of day for the trip?

From 1 pm onwards, when the Garbinada comes in. This south-westerly thermal wind blows from June to September at a steady 8–15 knots — the window when the catamaran can truly plane across the Garraf's waters.

What is the difference between this trip and the Sailing Taster?

The Adrenaline trip is a guided experience: the instructor sails, you enjoy the speed. The Sailing Taster is an active lesson aboard the Ludic where the goal is for you to learn and take the tiller yourself. If you want to learn sailing from scratch, the Sailing Taster is your option.

What is the difference between this trip and the Catamaran Hire?

The Hire is for people with proven dinghy sailing experience who want to sail entirely on their own. The Adrenaline trip offers the same boat and the same thrill, but with the instructor on board handling the manoeuvres. No prior experience? This is your option.

The experience — Catamaran Hire on the Costa del Garraf

Catamaran hire in Vilanova is not for everyone. There is no skippered charter, no instructor on board and no closed group.

If you have certified dinghy-sailing knowledge and pass the prior level test, the catamaran is yours for two hours. Rigged, ready, waiting.

The activity starts at the RocRoi centre in Vilanova i la Geltrú, on Platja de Ribes Roges. Staff verify the level test, hand over the buoyancy aid and review the weather forecast before every launch. If the wind exceeds 15 knots, the session is rescheduled — safety comes first.

The route covers the authorised sailing zone off the Costa del Garraf, with the Garbí wind arriving from the south-west from 1 pm. And here is the detail that changes the day: this thermal wind is constant between June and September, at 8–15 knots, perfect for reaching. To the west, the catamaran can approach Els Colls and Miralpeix, a protected natural area on the border with Sitges.

And in the end, two hours feel short. The catamaran touches down on the same beach, staff check the craft and changing rooms with showers await on return. What you take away is not the outing — it is the feeling of having sailed alone, with the Garbí working in your favour and the Garraf coast as your track.

What the experience feels like

Couples: two hours alone with the Garbí, sailing a coastline very few know from the water. A couples' experience designed for those who can read a sail.

Groups of friends: compete, explore, test yourselves. The Garbí is the same for everyone, but not everyone uses it equally well.

Premium · Exclusivity: self-sail off the Garraf cliffs, no instructor, no groups, no intermediaries. Just the sea and the craft.

Yes. This service is for people with certified dinghy-sailing knowledge. When sailing without an instructor you must be able to manoeuvre, trim the sails and know the right-of-way rules at sea.

What if I want to sail a catamaran but have no experience?

Then your product is the Catamaran Adrenaline Trip: same craft, with an instructor on board and no prior experience required. All the thrill of catamaran sailing on the Costa del Garraf, with no accreditation needed.

How many people can go on board?

Depending on the model available, the usual capacity is 2 to 3 people. Ideal for couples or small groups who want to sail together independently.

How is safety managed during the hire?

The RocRoi team monitors weather conditions at all times. Craft are hired out for light-to-moderate wind, never above 15 knots. Staff supervise every launch and the client signs a responsibility acceptance form.

What is the best time to catch the wind?

From 1 pm, when the Garbí — the Garbinada — arrives: a south-westerly thermal wind of 8 to 15 knots, constant and reliable between June and September. The ideal slot for reaching.

What does the level test involve?

The test demonstrates sufficient knowledge to: launch from the beach and return through the surf zone safely; know the right-of-way rules and permitted sailing zones; sail upwind, downwind and across the wind; perform stop-and-start manoeuvres; and know how to right the craft.
