Archery in Pallars Sobirà

The tension of the bow sets the pace of the session. Guests pick up the grip for the first time, pull the string until they feel the resistance and learn to release the arrow with a relaxed arm. This archery session at Lake Torrassa feels like a concentration ritual: breathe, aim, hit. The range is set in the black pine forest of Alt Àneu, with targets laid out in a clearing and pre-Pyrenean peaks framing the backdrop.

The activity starts at the RocRoi base by the Llac de la Torrassa. The qualified instructor hands over the bow, quiver with arrows and protective gear — finger tab and arm guard — and explains the shooting stance: steady feet, aligned hips, arm tense but not rigid. The briefing is just long enough for anyone from 11 years old with an adult to shoot the first arrow with confidence. Up to 15 archers can be on the range at the same time, each with their own target.

Then the shots begin. At first the arrows fly with surprises: some short, some high, some far from the target. With the instructor's tips — aim lower, release without pushing, breathe between shots — accuracy improves round after round. The silence of the Alt Pirineu Natural Park adds something unexpected: the clear sound of the arrow sinking into the straw, the clean snap you only hear when everything around is quiet. Around the range you hear the wind in the pines, the distant call of a roe deer or a magpie, and nothing else.

The moment everyone remembers is the first arrow in the centre of the target. Silence, a half-smile, the instructor's nod. In 30 minutes you go from never having touched a bow to landing three arrows in a row close to the yellow. At the end of the session, the feeling is not physical tiredness: it is focus, concentration and the strange calm that comes from spending half an hour thinking about one single thing in a high-mountain setting.

What the experience feels like

Families: Parents and children from 11 years old challenge each other on the range, each with their own target. Kids get hooked by the third arrow and adults rediscover a focus-based activity that does not demand fitness. An ideal plan for hot days or light rain, as an alternative to lake water activities.

Groups of friends: Friendly competition of accuracy in the Alt Àneu forest, with up to 15 archers on the range at once. The compact 30-minute format fits perfectly into a full day at Lake Torrassa combined with kayak, Big SUP or SUP.

FAQs

Is archery safe for children?

Yes. The session is supervised at all times by a qualified instructor. Bows are adapted to the age of participants and mandatory protective gear (finger tab and arm guard) is provided. The minimum age is 11 accompanied by an adult, and the range follows strict shooting and safety lanes: no one walks in front of the archers until the instructor authorises collecting the arrows.

Do I need previous experience?

No. This is a beginner session: the instructor teaches the stance, bow tension and basic shooting technique from scratch. By the third or fourth arrow most participants are already hitting near the centre. No special fitness level is required.

How many arrows do you shoot in 30 minutes?

It depends on the group's pace, but typically each archer shoots between 20 and 30 arrows. The instructor organises shots in rounds of 4 to 6 arrows in a row, then pauses to collect from the range and correct technique before repeating. The 30 minutes go by very quickly.

Can I combine it with another Lake Torrassa activity?

Yes. The session fits perfectly into a day combined with kayak, paddleboarding, Big SUP or pedalos at the same meeting point. Archery works very well as a break between two water activities: change of pace, less direct sun exposure and a short format that makes it easy to plan your day.

Does the session go ahead if it rains?

In light rain the session goes ahead: the range is partially sheltered by the forest and the bows cope perfectly. It is only cancelled in case of thunderstorms, strong winds or conditions that compromise safety. If the centre cancels, you will be offered a date change or an ADVENTURE voucher.
