Itinerary via ferrata en Girona

The easy Roca de la Creu via ferrata experience

The activity starts in Ribes de Freser, at the heart of the Vall de Ribes. The guide team hands out CE-approved gear — helmet, harness and energy absorber — and runs through the beginner briefing before heading to the Roca de la Creu: how to use the safety carabiners, how to progress on the wall and what to do if your feet lose their footing. For many participants, this is the first time they have ever worn a harness. The aim of the briefing is to make sure that does not show once they reach the rock.

The K2 ferrata ascends over Palaeozoic schist from the Pyrenean axial zone — the rock that defines the character of the Ripollès. The iron rungs are well spaced and the progression is logical: gaining height while building confidence, with no sudden jumps in difficulty. As the group climbs, the Vall de Ribes opens up to the south and the Taga at 2,040 metres marks the eastern horizon. The guide explains the geology, manages the pace and belays each section with an additional rope for anyone who needs it.

The best part of the Roca de la Creu is the view from the top: the Puigmal at 2,913 metres to the north, the village of Ribes de Freser seen from above, the feeling of having climbed the wall rather than walked around it. The descent brings the group back to the foot of the rock with the quiet certainty that K3 no longer sounds so far away.

What the experience feels like

Families: the Roca de la Creu is designed so that children from 10 years old complete the route with the same gear as the adults and the same sense of achievement at the top. The Puigmal in the distance and Ribes de Freser at your feet.

Couples: a K2 that requires no prior experience and delivers views of the Puigmal and the Vall de Ribes that few weekend activities in the Ripollès can match. A couple’s first contact with the vertical world is always a before and after.

Groups of friends: the group’s vertical baptism. The Roca de la Creu levels the playing field: it doesn’t matter who has the most experience, because nobody has done this before. At the top, the Puigmal, the Taga and the Vall de Ribes close the horizon in every direction. The next challenge already has a name: the Baumes Corcades K3-K4.

Who can perform this activity

FAQs

Is this via ferrata suitable for children and families with no prior experience?

Absolutely. The Roca de la Creu K2 is the quintessential beginner via ferrata of the Ripollès. Its progressive design allows children from 10 years old and 120 cm tall to complete the route with CE-approved gear under continuous guide supervision. No prior technical experience is required: the full briefing before entering the route covers everything you need to know.

What safety gear is provided?

Full gear approved to European standards is provided: a climbing helmet, harness and via ferrata-specific energy absorber. All gear is checked before each activity. You only need to bring footwear with a gripped sole and sports clothing appropriate for the weather.

What happens if someone in the group feels vertigo during the route?

Our guides are qualified and trained in rescue techniques. The Roca de la Creu has a logical progression that builds confidence step by step. If someone freezes up, the guide applies additional rope belay and direct technical support at the specific move so the participant can work through it at their own pace and without external pressure.

What is the best time of year to do this via ferrata?

Thanks to its moderate altitude and aspect, the Roca de la Creu is doable almost all year round. Spring offers the Vall de Ribes in full green bloom. Autumn brings warm colours and perfect lateral light. In winter, sunny days are particularly pleasant, and in summer a dusk version is available. It is only suspended in the event of heavy rain, snow on the route or a weather alert.

How does this via ferrata compare to the Baumes Corcades K3-K4 and the Roques de l’Empalomar K4?

The Roca de la Creu K2 is the entry point into the vertical world: no prior experience, from 10 years old, full briefing included. It is the via ferrata for those who have never worn a harness. The Baumes Corcades K3-K4 is the next step up: more physically demanding, with the 69-metre Nepalese bridge as the highlight, from 12 years old. The Roques de l’Empalomar K4 is the advanced level of the Berguedà: technical overhangs, for those who already have via ferrata experience, from 16 years old. Each route has its own audience and its own moment.
