The kayak excursion on the Escales Reservoir is designed for those who want to experience the Pyrenees from the water — calmly and without technical pressure. Nestled between towering rock faces and high-mountain scenery, on the border between the Lleida and Huesca Pyrenees, this reservoir offers a current-free environment perfect for first-time kayakers or for a shared family activity.

The activity opens with a brief explanation from the certified guide covering the basic paddle strokes and safety rules. From there, you set off on a guided route of around 2 hours, always matched to the group’s pace, paddling across glassy water while taking in the silence and vastness of the Pyrenean landscape.

We venture into the Congost d’Aulet (formerly known as Congost del Borrugat), a canyon formed by the Noguera Ribagorçana river cutting through the mountains. Along one hillside you will spot caves and nesting sites of birds of prey — eagles, griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures and bearded vultures — as you glide across the turquoise, transparent water of the reservoir.

Throughout the crossing, the guide interprets the natural and geological environment. Depending on the water level, it may be possible to see the remains of old infrastructure and spots barely reachable from land: the ruins of the village of Aulet and the Monastery of Santa Maria de Lavaix.

The excursion uses stable kayaks, with all technical equipment included and professional support throughout. More than a sport, it is a slow way to connect with nature and discover the Pyrenees from a different, accessible perspective.
