The Obarra canyon is a rope-free water descent and one of the few in the Pyrenees where an 11th-century Lombard Romanesque monastery marks the exit of the gorge. Highly aquatic with natural slides, pools and sheer limestone walls sculpted by the Isábena river in the heart of the Ribagorza.

What the experience feels like
Families: a natural waterpark designed for families with children from age 10.
Couples: four hours of water canyon in the Isábena. No abseils, no technical stops — water, limestone and the outline of the monastery to open and close the day.
Groups of friends: the long canyon for groups who have already done a descent and want pure water without going back to abseiling. Chained slides, optional jumps and the challenge of completing the entire gorge.

- Full technical equipment: two-piece wetsuit, CE-approved helmet, neoprene shoes

- Not included: transport from the base to the canyon start. Participants follow the guide’s car in their own vehicle. If you do not have a vehicle, contact us before booking.

For your comfort and safety, we recommend bringing:
- Swimwear
- Thermal base layer or lycra (worn under the wetsuit)
- Lace-up sports shoes that can get wet, with a good sole (no flip-flops or open footwear)
- A change of shoes for after the activity
- Water and a snack for 4 hours of activity
- Towel and a change of clothes
What to bring
Practical details – Obarra Canyon
There are no abseils or vertical ropes, but there is 1h30 of sustained physical effort in the water with no exit points along the route. Swimming ability is mandatory. Jumps are never compulsory.
- Minimum age: 10 years with a responsible adult / 18 years without a companion.
- Total duration: approximately 4 hours (1h30 in the canyon, the rest for kit-up and approach).
- Physical condition: swimming ability required. Not recommended for pregnant women, people with heart conditions, serious medical issues or vertigo. Not accessible for wheelchair users.
- Attitude: sustained willingness to be in the water, group spirit to complete the descent and an alert mind to appreciate the Lombard Romanesque architecture before getting wet.

FAQs
What obstacles are there in the Obarra canyon? Are there any abseils?
No abseils. The descent is pure water canyoning: chained natural slides, passages between rocks and pools deep enough to swim, designed for those who want a long day of water without abseiling technique. Optional jumps into pools can always be bypassed by an alternative route.
What is the difference between the Obarra canyon and the Viu Superior?
The Viu Superior is a short canyon with one 6-metre abseil in the Pre-Pyrenean limestone of Lleida. Obarra has no abseils, runs in Aragón and starts beneath an 11th-century Romanesque monastery. If you want a canyon with abseiling, go for Viu Superior. If you want a long aquatic descent with heritage, Obarra is the one.
Can you do the Obarra canyon with no previous canyoning experience?
It is Level 2 Beginner–Intermediate. The technique is accessible (no abseils), but the sustained physical commitment and absence of exit points mean we recommend at least one prior aquatic canyon experience. If this would be your very first descent, a shorter canyon is a better starting point.
What should I know about the Monastery of Santa María de Obarra before visiting?
It is an 11th-century Lombard Romanesque Benedictine monastery, listed as a Site of Cultural Interest. It stands at the natural entrance to the Obarra Gorge in the Isábena valley, and the approach to the water passes right by its walls. It is worth arriving a few minutes early to take it in before pulling on your wetsuit.
Is transport to the canyon included in the price?
No. The drive from the Pont de Suert base to the canyon start is in your own vehicle, following the guide’s car. If you do not have a vehicle, contact us before booking to discuss options.
