What the experience feels like
Families: slate slides the kids will never forget and abseils that show adults the Pyrenees are best enjoyed from the inside. Upper Estarón is the canyon that turns a family into a team.
Couples: shared technique, controlled adrenaline and a slate gorge that can only be seen from the water. Estarón de Dalt is the trip that takes couples beyond conventional hiking without exposing them to unnecessary risks.
Groups of friends: 20-metre abseils demand focus, and the laughs come naturally on the slides. A day in the Valls d’Àneu that the group will remember next time someone suggests doing ‘something different’ in the Pyrenees.

FAQs
How difficult is the Upper Estarón Canyon?
It is a beginner-intermediate canyon. It combines natural slate slides and abseils of up to 20 metres. No prior technical experience is required: RocRoi guides provide full training before entering the gorge. Normal physical fitness and a head for heights are required.
Is it suitable for families with young children?
Yes. The minimum age is 6, accompanied by a responsible adult. The guide adapts the pace to the group and supervises every slide and abseil. It is one of the most highly rated activities for families seeking a first technical experience in the Pyrenees in complete safety.
Do I need to know how to abseil before I come?
No, you don’t. Before entering the gorge, the guide runs a practical training session on dry land: descender, harness, carabiners and slide technique. By the first abseil you will have practised dry, and supervision is continuous throughout the descent.
What is the difference between Upper Estarón and Lower Estarón?
Upper Estarón is the beginner-intermediate section: abseils up to 20 metres, suitable from age 6, ideal for families and first technical experiences. Lower Estarón is the advanced section: abseils up to 40 metres, higher technical and physical demands, no under-16s. If you have already done the Upper, the Lower is your natural next challenge.
When is the best time for canyoning in Estarón?
The usual season runs from mid-March to early October. Spring offers higher water levels and lush scenery. Summer is perfect for enjoying the cool water. Autumn provides spectacular low light and unique Pyrenean colours. In the event of heavy rain or hydrological warnings, the activity may be modified for safety.
