Open Kayak on the Gállego River: your boat, your pace

View photos

In rafting, the guide decides the line. In open kayaking, you do. That changes everything. Your boat, your pace, your reading of the current — with the Mallos de Riglos in the background and two hours of river ahead.

The Murillo stretch of the Gállego rewards every well-executed paddle stroke with a section of waves, a curve between conglomerate walls or a river beach where you can stop and catch your breath. Autonomy has a price: you have to earn it on the water. And that is exactly what makes it worthwhile.

  • Single or double boat — you decide the line, the guide supervises
  • Adventure Level: sit-on-top kayak in the whitewater of the Gállego
  • 2 hours in the water — wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid and transport included

Itinerary

The open kayak experience on the Gállego River

Rafting is collective by design. Open kayaking reverses that order. Your boat —single or double, inflatable and self-bailing— is yours from the moment you leave the base. Nobody decides for you which line to take in the next rapid. The guide navigates alongside the group, reads the river and is there if you need them, but the paddle stroke is yours.

The activity starts at the Murillo de Gállego base. The team provides the technical gear and the guide gives a comprehensive briefing on paddling technique, safety posture and how to read the current. Transport to the starting point is included. The section of the Gállego under the Mallos de Riglos and Peña Rueba combines fast-flowing channels, wave trains and calm pools where the river opens up. Griffon vultures glide above the 300-metre conglomerate walls.

The sit-on-top kayak absorbs impacts and easily stabilises if capsized, making recovery straightforward. For two hours, the Gállego transforms from a landscape into a conversation between you, your paddle and the current.

What the experience feels like

Couples: a double kayak, two paddles, and the Gállego deciding if you paddle at the same rhythm. There are few better ways to discover how someone works under pressure — and to laugh about it afterwards.

Groups of friends: each in their own kayak, same current. The natural competition between boats turns every rapid into a mini-race that nobody agreed to, but everyone wants to win.

FAQs

Do I need previous whitewater kayaking experience?

No. The self-bailing open kayak is a very stable craft, designed not to capsize easily. The guide conducts a full technical briefing before entering the water: paddling technique, reading the current and safety posture. The only essential requirement is that you know how to swim and feel comfortable in the water.

What is the difference between open kayaking and rafting?

In rafting, you share a large boat with the group and the guide is on board steering the raft. In open kayaking, you take your own boat —single or double— and you decide the line of navigation. The guide’s supervision is external, not internal. More autonomy, making your own decisions, on the same river.

What happens if my kayak capsizes?

The open kayak is self-bailing and sit-on-top: you won’t get trapped, and it easily stabilises once righted. Your buoyancy aid ensures you float at all times. Following the safety instructions from the briefing, getting back onto the kayak is simple with the help of the guide, who is always within visual range of the group.

Can I do a double kayak with someone who has no experience?

Yes. The double kayak shares the paddling effort between two people, making it more accessible if one of you is less confident initially. The guide assigns positions based on the group’s level and adjusts the pace in the first few sections until both paddlers get the hang of the technique.

I’d prefer to go in a group without having to decide the route — what do you recommend?

If you’re looking for a more collective experience where the guide is in control from inside the boat, our medium-level rafting on the same river is the perfect option. Same environment, same Mallos de Riglos, but in a shared raft with the guide on board.
