Itinerary Kayak mar Nerja y Maro

The kayak route along the Nerja and Maro cliffs

The coastline between Nerja and Maro holds some of the most spectacular scenery on the Costa del Sol, and most of it is only reachable from the sea. This guided kayak route, departing from Burriana Beach, visits the most impressive points along the shoreline over three hours of complete experience.

The activity kicks off with a brief technical session on the shore: how to paddle, how to steer the kayak and how to read the environment. Within minutes the group is on the water, moving alongside the cliffs with the guide leading the way. No prior experience needed: sit-on-top kayaks are highly stable and the guide adjusts the pace to the group’s level throughout.

Along the way, the guide points out and explains the highlights: the underwater entrance of the Sea Wolf Cave, visible from the kayak at waterline level; the Vertical Garden, a cliff wall with lush overhanging vegetation above the sea; and at the end of the route, the Maro Waterfall cascading directly into the Mediterranean. Whenever sea conditions allow, the guide takes the group right to the base of the waterfall.

The photo report is included in the price: the guide documents the route so the memories come home with you without anyone having to worry about a camera.

Route itinerary

  • Burriana Beach: technical briefing and launch.
  • Paddling alongside the cliffs: first stretch taking in rock formations and hidden coves.
  • Sea Wolf Cave: sea-level access to a cavity visible only from the water.
  • Vertical Garden: cliff face covered in vegetation that tumbles directly into the sea.
  • Maro Waterfall: end point of the route, where fresh water falls straight into the Mediterranean.
  • Return to Burriana.

The Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Site

The cliffs between Nerja and Maro are part of the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Site, a protected area of more than 1,900 hectares where 80% of the territory is marine. Along the route you may spot posidonia meadows, sea caves, birds such as the peregrine falcon and the pallid swift, and an underwater world of grouper, moray eels and shoals of fish.

FAQs

Is kayaking in Nerja hard if it’s my first time?

Not at all. The route is designed for beginners and families. Sit-on-top kayaks are used — very stable and easy to handle — with a prior briefing and a pace adapted to the group. The guide is with you the whole way.

Do you always reach the Maro Waterfall?

Whenever sea conditions allow and at the guide’s discretion. Under normal conditions the route reaches the base of the Waterfall. If conditions are not ideal, the guide adjusts the itinerary and focuses on the other points of interest.

Where does the kayak excursion depart from?

From Burriana Beach, one of Nerja’s most convenient and well-known sea access points, with nearby parking and easy access from the town centre.

Is this a safe activity for families with young children?

Yes, from age 4 with an accompanying adult. The open kayak is stable and the guide adapts the pace to the group at all times. It is one of the most popular activities for families in Nerja.

What happens if the sea conditions are not suitable?

A date change or full refund will be offered at no extra cost. Group safety is always the top priority.
