The experience — Roadless coves on the Costa Brava

You arrive at Platja del Castell and the first thought is that this corner of Palamós is oddly quiet. Too quiet for the Costa Brava in summer. The reason is that the Castell–Cap Roig headland only just escaped development, and what remains is exactly the kind of coastline the Costa Brava always wanted to be: rocks, pine trees, transparent water and almost nobody.

The technical team at the base equips you with kayak, paddle and buoyancy aid. Before setting off they give you the basics: how to paddle, how to turn and what to do if the wind picks up. Five minutes. Enough to head out with confidence having never paddled before.

You paddle towards Cap Roig and the coastline begins to break into a succession of rocky formations that have no equivalent from the land. The Banyera de la Russa is the first stop that everyone who has been before comes back to: a circular rock formation where the water sits still in that turquoise-green colour that looks exaggerated in photos but is even more intense in person. And you can swim there. With nobody telling you how long to stay.

Cala Estreta and Cala S’Alguer have no road access. That means when you arrive by kayak you have them almost to yourself. You can explore the shallows or simply float with the view of the Costa Brava cliffs from the side the brochures never show.

Three hours gives you time to reach the coves and return at a relaxed pace. If you take four, you have time to linger.

What the experience feels like

Families: Double kayaks are perfect for children from age 4. The sea in front of Platja del Castell, sheltered by the headlands, is particularly suitable for families with young children. Discovering the first coves from the water is one of those moments children do not forget.

Couples: Three or four hours with no itinerary or organised group on one of the least crowded stretches of the Costa Brava. The stop at Cala Estreta or the Banyera de la Russa is the swim that makes the trip worthwhile.

Groups of friends: No guide setting the pace and no mandatory stops — the group decides where to go. Cala Estreta has room for a swim and, weather permitting, Cap Roig closes the route with a view that is not easily forgotten.
