Riverboarding on the Gállego River: free-body rapids
In a raft, the river passes underneath you. In riverboarding, the river is at eye level or above. That is the difference. Your body is 70% submerged, the board is your only support, and the Gállego rapids respond to every movement of your torso. There are no middlemen between you and the water.
The middle section of the Gállego offers two hours of Grade III rapids, standing waves and real-time current reading. It is the most immersive activity on the river — and the one that leaves an impression that is hardest to explain when you reach the end.
- Level 3 — the most thrilling descent in Murillo de Gállego
- Total body immersion: you steer the board with your body weight and fins
- 2 hours in the water — up to 7mm wetsuit with knee and shin protectors

The riverboarding experience on the Gállego River
Rafting keeps you on the river. Kayaking gives you distance. Riverboarding puts you right inside it. It is the most immersive whitewater discipline: 70% of your body is in permanent contact with the current and it's you —not a boat— who reads the rapids, rides the waves and steers the board using the weight of your torso and the thrust of your fins.
The activity kicks off at the Murillo de Gállego base. The team equips you with a specific wetsuit up to 7mm thick with knee and shin protectors, helmet, buoyancy aid and the river board. The guide provides a technical briefing covering the correct position, finning technique and what to do if you let go of the board. Transport to the starting point is included. The section of the Gállego below the Mallos de Riglos concentrates the river's most technical rapids: standing waves, stoppers that turn the current and rocky channels that demand quick decisions.
The guide navigates alongside the group, reading the river in real time and adjusting the route. The riverbed is deep in this section, which minimises contact with the bottom and maximises safety. If you do let go of the board, your buoyancy aid will keep you afloat in a safe position while the guide executes the rescue.

FAQs
How is riverboarding different from rafting?
In rafting you sit on a boat; in riverboarding, 70% of your body is submerged and you steer the board using your torso weight and fins. It is the most technical and immersive river discipline: you read the rapids in real time and the current responds directly to your movements.
Do I need to be a great swimmer to do riverboarding?
You don't need to be a competitive swimmer, but you must be able to swim confidently and feel comfortable in moving water. The up to 7mm wetsuit and buoyancy aid guarantee flotation at all times. The guide teaches the finning technique before you enter the water and adapts the pace to the group.
Does the equipment protect against the cold and hitting rocks?
Yes. The wetsuit is up to 7mm thick —above the usual standard— guaranteeing thermal comfort even in snowmelt waters. The knee and shin protectors absorb impacts with rocks. The board itself acts as a frontal shield. The Murillo stretch has a deep channel that minimises contact with the bottom.
What happens if I let go of the board in the middle of a rapid?
It is unlikely —you wear a safety leash attached to the board— but if it were to happen, the buoyancy aid keeps you afloat in a safe position: feet forward, back in the water. The guide executes the rescue in seconds. They are trained for exactly this scenario.
Is riverboarding suitable if I have already rafted the Gállego?
It is the natural next step. Riverboarding is Level 3 compared to rafting's Level 2: same river, same Mallos de Riglos in the background, but a completely different relationship with the water. If you were comfortable rafting and want more technical intensity, riverboarding is for you.
