The Kayak Hoces del Cabriel experience

Kayaking on the Hoces del Cabriel means a solo open kayak: a stable craft that lets you set your own line at every rapid. The descent runs through the Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park, a Biosphere Reserve, between limestone canyons and poplar and willow woodland. Three hours paddling on crystal-clear water.

The activity starts at the Albergue Hoces del Cabriel in Venta del Moro. The team hands out wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid and paddle. The qualified guide spends the first few minutes on paddling technique: how to hold the paddle, how to correct your line and what to do if you capsize. Just enough to get on the river with a clear head.

The route gradually opens the canyon. The Grade II rapids come in short bursts: strong pulse, coordinated strokes, the kayak running clean once it finds the line. Between rapids, the river widens and reveals what you can’t see from the road: raptors circling above the cliff faces, the occasional otter tucked into the bank, limestone walls closing suddenly around you. The guides have been reading these waters for 30 years, so the calls come in right before each tricky turn.

The session ends when the group reunites at the take-out, after the final rapids. You’ve descended one of the three cleanest and best-preserved rivers in Europe with no one else in your kayak. Just you, the paddle and the Cabriel.

FAQs

Is the kayak hard to handle if I’ve never paddled before?

No. The open kayak is a stable model built for beginners. The qualified guide spends the first few minutes on paddling technique: how to hold the paddle, how to correct your line and what to do if you capsize. Most people find their confidence within the first 100 metres.

From what age can children join?

From age 10 with an adult, provided they can swim. For younger children we recommend other Cabriel options in our catalogue: rafting is accessible from age 8 in a shared raft with the guide directing the line.

How does it differ from rafting or canoraft?

Kayaking is solo: each participant paddles their own boat and sets their own line. Rafting uses an inflatable raft for 6–8 people with a guide on board. The canoraft is a two-person inflatable canoe, a hybrid format between kayaking and rafting. Kayaking demands more independence and technique.

What wildlife and scenery can you see on the descent?

The descent runs through the Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park, a Biosphere Reserve. The landscape is limestone canyons with riverside woodland of poplars and willows; between rapids you may spot birds of prey circling the cliff faces and, with luck, otters on the bank.

What do I need to bring?

Swimsuit, towel, change of clothes for afterwards and footwear that can get wet (no flip-flops). RocRoi provides wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid, paddle and kayak.
