The Canoraft Hoces del Cabriel experience

Canorafting on the Hoces del Cabriel means a two-person inflatable canoe: more stable than a rigid kayak, with all its manoeuvrability. Two paddlers, two paddles, the Cabriel river as your track. The descent runs through the Hoces del Cabriel Natural Park, a pristine riverside ecosystem where limestone formations create deep gorges and the riverbed is visible right to the bottom.

The activity starts at the Albergue Hoces del Cabriel in Venta del Moro. The team hands out wetsuits, helmets, buoyancy aids and two paddles per canoe. The qualified guide spends the first few minutes teaching you to read the river from scratch: how to coordinate strokes with your partner, how to enter a rapid and what to do if you end up in the water. Which is likely. And that's part of the fun.

The route enters the Hoces rapids. The canoe responds instantly: a good stroke and it straightens up; a bad one and you're in the reeds. Between demanding sections, the river calms and the canyon opens up. Crystal-clear water, full visibility to the bottom, limestone walls. Then another rapid, and back to coordinating again.

The session ends at the take-out, where the team collects you. You've steered your own canoe down one of the three cleanest and best-preserved rivers in Europe. A restorative shower at the hostel, and you're done.

What the experience feels like

Families: A two-person canoe with an adult and a child from age 8: the perfect crew for children to feel they are steering in whitewater for the first time.

Couples: Two paddlers, two paddles and a river that forces you to coordinate in silence. The Hoces del Cabriel is the setting where couples discover whether they paddle in sync or end up in the reeds. Both make a good story.

Groups of friends: One canoe per pair, friendly rivalry between boats and the freedom to push ahead or hang back as each pair sees fit. A plan that works for small groups and keeps rewarding itself throughout the day.

FAQs

What exactly is a canoraft?

It is a two-person inflatable craft, more stable than a rigid kayak but just as agile. It carries two paddlers with double-blade paddles and allows you to set your own line through the rapids. It is a hybrid format between a solo canoe and a rafting raft, designed for beginner whitewater.

How does it differ from rafting or open kayak?

Rafting uses an inflatable raft for 6–8 people with a guide on board directing the line. The open kayak is solo, one person per boat. The canoraft is two-person: both paddlers coordinate in the same canoe with no guide on board, following guides who accompany the group from separate craft.

From what age can children join?

From age 8 with an adult, provided they can swim. It is one of the most family-friendly descents on the Cabriel: the adult steers from the back and the child paddles in the front of the same canoe.

Is it hard to handle the canoe if we've never paddled?

No. The two-person inflatable canoe is very stable and designed not to capsize easily. The qualified guide spends the first few minutes on paddling technique and coordination between the two paddlers. Learning the basics in those first minutes is more than enough to enjoy it.

What do I need to bring?

Swimsuit, towel, change of clothes for afterwards and footwear that can get wet (no flip-flops). RocRoi provides wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aids, paddles and canoe.
