The Faja de las Flores is a limestone ledge carved by glacial erosion into the south wall of the Ordesa Canyon at 2,400 metres altitude. From there the canyon reveals its true scale: a kilometre of vertical wall directly below, the Cola de Caballo waterfall in the depths and Monte Perdido — the highest limestone massif in Europe at 3,355 metres — closing the horizon. Many consider this the most spectacular hiking route in Spain.

For your comfort and safety, we recommend bringing:
- Mountain boots with a good sole (essential — trail running shoes or trainers are not suitable)
- Rucksack with water for the full day (minimum 2 litres)
- Food for an 8-hour day
- Clothing appropriate for high-mountain weather (it can change rapidly at 2,400 m)
- Windproof jacket or waterproof shell
- Gloves (required for the equipped sections)
- Sunglasses and sun cream
- Cap or hat

Practical details – Faja de las Flores, Ordesa
The Faja de las Flores requires good physical fitness and experience of full-day mountain routes. The cumulative elevation gain (1,000–1,400 m) and duration (8 real hours) are demanding. The equipped sections of the Faja (fixed cables and steps) require coordination and no severe vertigo.
- Minimum age: 14 years with a responsible adult / 18 years without a companion.
- Total duration: 9 hours (8 hours of actual walking).
- Physical condition: good fitness; prior experience of full-day mountain routes; no severe vertigo.
- Restrictions: not recommended for pregnant women, people with serious heart conditions, severe vertigo or active knee injuries; mountain boots with a Vibram-type sole are essential.
- Access: in high season (June–September) the Pradera de Ordesa requires a shuttle bus from Torla-Ordesa (not included); allow sufficient time to reach Torla-Ordesa.
- Season: June–October (snow may cover the Faja well into June).
- Attitude: genuine physical preparation, respect for the wildlife — chamois are observed, not chased — and awareness that the mountain can change in minutes at 2,400 metres. The guide manages the pace; the group manages its own preparation.

What makes the Faja de las Flores one of the best hiking routes in Spain?
The combination of factors is unique: a natural limestone ledge at 2,400 metres with the Ordesa Canyon dropping away throughout the entire route, protected alpine flora (edelweiss, Pyrenean iris), endemic wildlife (Pyrenean chamois, bearded vulture) and the UNESCO World Heritage setting of the Parque Nacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido. No other hiking route in Spain combines all these elements in a single day.
What is edelweiss and where can you see it on the Faja de las Flores?
Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) is a plant in the daisy family that grows only on high-mountain limestone soils (1,500–3,000 m), particularly in the Pyrenees and the Alps. It is legally protected in Spain. On the Faja de las Flores it grows on the limestone shelves of the ledge, especially in the middle section of the route between 2,200 and 2,400 metres. The guide points out specimens during the walk.
Are Pyrenean chamois always seen on the Faja de las Flores?
Pyrenean chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica) are very common on the Faja de las Flores. Ordesa National Park holds 5,000–6,000 individuals and the chamois on the Faja are accustomed to human presence. The probability of a sighting is high, especially in the first and last hours of the day. No sighting is guaranteed, but the Faja is the best place in the ecosystem to see them.
Does the Faja de las Flores route require technical climbing equipment?
It is not climbing, but it has equipped sections with fixed cables and steps (similar to a gentle via ferrata) which the guide manages with a harness and via ferrata lanyards included in the price. The rest of the route is technical mountain hiking with mountain boots. No prior climbing experience is required.
How do you get to the Pradera de Ordesa from Torla?
The Pradera de Ordesa is inside the National Park, 8 km from Torla-Ordesa. In high season (June–September) private vehicle access is restricted and the shuttle bus from the Torla-Ordesa car park is compulsory (every 15–20 minutes, cost included in the park entry fee).
