Itinerary

The experience: Kayak route along the River Ebro

The Ebro rises in Cantabria and takes hundreds of kilometres to become the river it is here, between Miravet and Benifallet. The activity starts in Miravet: the guide team hands out the kit, explains paddling technique and runs through safety protocols while the Templar Castle of Miravet keeps watch from the top of the crag. The first few strokes reveal the river’s true character: riparian woodland closes in on both sides to form a corridor of near-pristine nature, where a Common Kingfisher or Grey Heron may appear at any moment.

At the Pas de Barrufemes, rocky walls press in and the landscape shifts in scale — it is no longer just a river but a gorge. The arrival in Benifallet closes the route with the same calm with which it began — twelve kilometres later, the group moors on the banks of one of the best-preserved villages in the Baix Ebre, at the heart of the Terres de l’Ebre Biosphere Reserve.

The return transfer is waiting to bring the group back to the starting point in Miravet.

What the experience feels like

Families: the RTM double-seat kayaks let the little ones paddle side by side with the adults, with the Templar Castle of Miravet as the backdrop for the first photo of the day.

Couples: three hours with the current behind you, riverside silence and a gorge to close the route. The Ebro provides the setting; you set the pace.

Groups of friends: a technically straightforward descent with history at every bend — the same river where the Battle of the Ebro was fought, now a Biosphere Reserve.

Practical details – Kayak Descent, Ebro, Baix Ebre, Biosphere Reserve

The calm waters of this stretch of the Ebro allow the guide to focus the briefing on enjoying the surroundings rather than mastering technique. Anyone in good health can complete the route without difficulty.

  • Minimum age with adult: 4 years / unaccompanied: 18 years.
  • Total duration: 2h30 to 3h (2 hours actual time on the water, 12 km route).
  • Physical condition: ability to swim is advisable. The gentle Ebro current makes progress easy without intense physical effort.
  • Limitations: not recommended for people with serious heart conditions or very limited mobility. Always inform the guide of allergies, phobias or physical limitations before starting.
  • Mindset: a desire to switch off, curiosity about the surroundings and a willingness to get wet. The Ebro takes care of the rest.

FAQs

How far do we paddle and what will we see during the 3 hours on the Ebro?

Approximately 12 kilometres between Miravet and Benifallet, along one of the best-preserved stretches of the Ebro. The route passes beneath the Templar Castle of Miravet and through the Pas de Barrufemes gorge. Riverside wildlife — Common Kingfisher, Grey Heron — accompanies the descent throughout.

Do I need prior kayaking experience?

No. This is a Level 1 – Discovery route, suitable for complete beginners. The Ebro at this point has calm water and a gentle current. Before setting off, the qualified guide explains paddling technique and safety protocols so the group takes to the water with confidence.

What about logistics for the car if the route goes from one point to another?

The return transfer from Benifallet to the starting point in Miravet is included in the price. There is no need to worry about leaving your vehicle or arranging your own transport: when the descent ends, the group is taken straight back to the start.

Can a 4-year-old take part?

Yes. The minimum age with an adult companion is 4 years. Double-seat kayaks allow the adult to control the boat while the child takes an active role in paddling. It is one of the most family-friendly water activities available in the Tarragona area.

What is the best stretch for kayaking on the River Ebro in Tarragona?

This section between Miravet and Benifallet is one of the most highly recommended for its calm waters, its length (12 km) and its protected natural surroundings within the Terres de l’Ebre Biosphere Reserve.
