You paddle the Tagus in a kayak at your own pace. No guide, no timetables. We hand out the gear at El Colvillo, take you to the put-in, and when you finish we collect the driver so they can go back for the car. Three hours on calm water with a free dry barrel, from age 5 with an adult. And if you've never paddled before, the guided version is the better choice.

The experience — Self-guided Tagus descent

You paddle the Tagus in a kayak. Just you and your group, no guide in the water. The self-guided Tagus hire is Level 2 Beginner: calm water, but two hours of active paddling. If you’ve never paddled on a river, the centre strongly recommends the guided version.

The activity starts at El Colvillo. The team hands out gear — kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid and a free 5-litre dry barrel for your phone or a dry picnic. If you requested a wetsuit 48 hours before, you collect it here for €5 per garment. Then a transfer to the put-in and into the water.

Two actual hours paddling the middle Tagus. The river snakes between limestone canyons and dense riverside vegetation that shelters the ecosystem. With no guide setting the pace, you stop when you feel like it, swim if you want, eat what you brought. Zero waste in the environment: rubbish comes back with you in the barrel at the end.

And the detail that changes everything: when you finish, the team collects the group’s driver exclusively and takes them back to El Colvillo to pick up the vehicle. Three hours of adventure without the logistical awkwardness of a self-guided kayak trip.

Included in the price

What the experience feels like

Families: hire with children from age 5 with an adult, no guide but with a dry barrel and driver transfer. If no one in the group has paddled a river before, the guided version is the safer choice.

Couples: three hours paddling the Tagus with no groups or guide. Calm water, stops whenever you choose and the car transfer sorted when you get back.

Groups of friends: the Tagus by kayak on your own terms with a free dry barrel. An affordable plan, no guide but with logistical back-up. If no one in the group has paddled a river, the guided version is advisable.

FAQs

How do I get back to my car after the self-guided Tagus kayak descent?

When the autonomous route ends, the El Colvillo team collects exclusively the group’s driver and transfers them free of charge back to the original meeting point to collect the vehicle and return for the rest of the group. This service is included in the €27 price and is one of the main differentiators from other local operators.

Is the self-guided Tagus descent safe without a guide if I’ve never paddled?

The stretch is calm water with no technical rapids. The kayak is stable and beginner-friendly. However, as it is self-guided with no guide in the water, if you’ve never paddled on a river the centre strongly recommends booking the guided version. A guide increases safety and adds environmental interpretation and basic technique.

Do I need to request the wetsuit separately and how much does it cost?

Yes. The wetsuit is not included in the base price of the self-guided descent. It is optional at €5 per garment and must be requested 48 hours in advance with approximate height and weight for each participant. Without this prior request, size availability on the day cannot be guaranteed.

Can I bring food and drink on the kayak during the self-guided descent?

Yes. A free 5-litre dry barrel is included for food, drink, your phone and dry personal items. All waste must come back with you at the end and be deposited in a bin: zero litter in the natural environment. Swimming in the river is permitted with the buoyancy aid on at all times.

How does the self-guided descent differ from the guided Tagus kayak descent?

The self-guided descent is unaccompanied with no guide in the water, free dry barrel and private driver transfer included. The guided descent includes a qualified guide in the water throughout the route and a custom-fit wetsuit in the price. The guided option is recommended for first-time river paddlers or when going with young children.
