Gloces Gorge in Fanlo: the narrowest canyon in Ordesa National Park
View photos
Some canyons open towards the sky; others close in until the sky is reduced to a sliver of light overhead. The Gloces Gorge is the latter kind. Carved into Sobrarbe limestone beside the village of Fanlo, its walls narrow to less than a metre at the tightest passages: a shadowy slot canyon, covered in vibrant moss and lit only by overhead shafts of light that reach the corridor floor at midday.
- Beginner level: suitable from 12 years with an adult
- Unique character: the narrowest and most shadowy canyon in the Ordesa ecosystem
- Digital photo report included

Practical details – Gloces Gorge
No prior experience is required. The character of the slot canyon differs from open canyons: the narrow passages require fluid, deliberate movement. The instructor explains the specific technique for this type of morphology before entering.
- Minimum age: 12 years with a responsible adult / 18 years unaccompanied.
- Total duration: 4 hours (approximately 2 hours 30 minutes of actual activity).
- Fitness: good general mobility; no severe claustrophobia.
- Limitations: not recommended for people with severe claustrophobia, pregnant women or those with mobility limitations in shoulders or hips; the narrowest passages require full freedom of movement. Please inform the instructor of any physical or psychological limitation before starting.
- Attitude: awareness of surroundings, patience at technical passages and an eagerness to photograph every corridor.

FAQs
What is a slot canyon and why is the Gloces Gorge one?
A slot canyon is a narrow-slot formation created by water erosion on highly resistant rock over millions of years. The walls are near-vertical and progressively close in until the canyon is less than a metre wide. The Gloces Gorge is carved into Sobrarbe limestone and is one of the rare slot canyon examples in the Aragonese Pyrenees.
Is claustrophobia a barrier to doing the Gloces Gorge?
Severe claustrophobia is a real contraindication. The narrowest slot canyon passages do not exceed one metre in width and the roof disappears for extended stretches. People with mild-to-moderate claustrophobia typically manage well with the instructor close by, but it is recommended to inform the guide before starting so that the pace can be adjusted.
How does the Gloces Gorge differ from the Viandico Canyon, both being beginner level?
They are geologically opposite. The Viandico is limestone, sunny, open and warm — the bright canyon of the Añisclo gorge. The Gloces is limestone in slot canyon form, shadowy, narrow and cool — the dark canyon of Fanlo. If the Viandico is the Mediterranean face of the ecosystem, the Gloces is its north-facing counterpart.
How do you get to the village of Fanlo and the canyon car park?
Fanlo is about 20 km from Broto along a mountain road. The Gloces Canyon car park is signposted on the edge of the village. Allow extra time before the briefing; the access road to Fanlo is narrow and in peak season can have brief traffic.
