What the experience feels like
Families: the discover dive is designed for children from age 10 to have their first autonomous dive with an instructor. Coming face to face with a giant grouper at 8 metres depth is the holiday memory that no other activity in the Mediterranean can match.
Couples: breathing underwater together for the first time, in silence, surrounded by the marine life of the richest reserve on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The discover dive in L’Estartit is the experience that appears in no Costa Brava guide and that both of you will remember for years.
Groups of friends: the first autonomous dive is an experience shared from below, not from the surface. The dive in the Montgrí waters is the plan nobody in the group suggests and that everyone is glad happened once they are back out of the water.

- Swimwear
- Biodegradable sun cream (do not use conventional sun cream near the marine reserve)
- Sunglasses and a hat
- Thermal base layer or lycra under the wetsuit (recommended in May–June and October)
- Towel and a change of dry clothes
What to bring
Practical details – Discover scuba diving in L’Estartit
No prior scuba or freediving experience is required. The instructor explains the equipment and basic signals before the dive. Maximum depth is 12 metres; the typical dive takes place between 6 and 8 metres.
- Minimum age: 10 years with a responsible adult / 12 years without a companion.
- Total duration: 3 hours (briefing + boat + ~20-minute dive + return).
- Physical condition: swimming ability required; good general health; no medical contraindications to diving.
- Restrictions: not recommended for pregnant women; not suitable for people with serious heart conditions, epilepsy, severe asthma or intense claustrophobia; inform the instructor of any medication or physical limitation before starting.
- Attitude: curiosity and trust in the instructor. The fear of breathing underwater disappears within the first thirty seconds of the dive. The Mediterranean does the rest.

What exactly does a discover scuba dive in L’Estartit involve?
It is your first dive with scuba equipment in the waters of the Parc Natural del Montgrí, off the Illes Medes. It includes a ~20-minute theory briefing covering the equipment and underwater signals, followed by a boat transfer and a guided dive of approximately 20 minutes at 6–12 metres depth with a certified instructor at all times.
What marine life can you see during the discover dive?
The Montgrí waters hold one of the highest concentrations of marine life in the western Mediterranean. On discover dives it is common to encounter groupers of up to a metre — completely habituated to divers — moray eels in their crevices, octopuses, red starfish, green anemones and posidonia seagrass meadows teeming with clouds of small silver fish.
What is the difference between the discover dive and snorkelling?
Snorkelling is done at the surface, floating with a mask and snorkel tube. The discover dive immerses you fully with scuba equipment to 6–12 metres: you breathe underwater, float in weightlessness and see marine life at its own level. It is the difference between looking at the seabed through a window and opening the door and stepping inside.
Do you need to be able to swim to do the discover dive?
Yes, a basic level of swimming ability is essential. You do not need to be an expert swimmer, but feeling comfortable in the water is necessary to enjoy the dive safely. The wetsuit and buoyancy compensator provide additional flotation throughout the activity.
Why are the Illes Medes special for diving?
The Illes Medes have been protected since 1983, generating a reserve effect that multiplies marine biomass five to ten times compared to unprotected areas.
