The abseil and rescue course experience

The day starts at the Baumes Corcades in Centelles, in the Osona region, on the same sandstone and conglomerate walls as the K3-K4 via ferrata. The TD2 qualified guide works with a maximum of four participants: the ratio that ensures every person practises every technique with individual correction and without waiting their turn. Before the practical session, each participant receives a digital technical manual: a reference they can revisit after the course and draw on in future seasons.

The day covers three modules. The first focuses on self-belay abseiling with one or two ropes: the methods that allow you to descend independently without relying on a guide. The second introduces pulley systems — the block-and-tackle setups that allow you to haul a person who is stuck on the wall. The third covers basic rescue of an incapacitated person on vertical terrain: how to secure a companion on ascent and descent, and how to manage a blockage calmly and methodically.

The setting is the Baumes Corcades, the same walls where the K3-K4 via ferrata with its 69-metre Nepalese bridge is practised. Using this route as a technical training ground before or after doing it as an activity is the natural complement. By the end, every participant knows exactly what to do if something goes wrong on any via ferrata.

Practical details – Rescue Course, Via Ferratas, Barcelona

  • Total duration: 8 hours.
  • Hands-on training time: 6 hours of practice.

  • Limitations: not suitable for pregnant women. Not suitable for people with serious heart conditions, back problems or vertigo.

FAQs

What exactly will I learn on the abseiling course?

You will learn to set up and execute abseils independently using different methods: single or double rope, in single or doubled-back configuration. You will also practise self-belay abseiling — the technique that lets you descend in complete safety without anyone belaying you from below. The guide corrects your position, hand technique and descender management on every repetition.

Is this course suitable if I have never done a via ferrata?

Yes. The course is open to all levels. With groups of four at most, the guide adapts the technical progression to each participant. You will receive a manual before the session to get familiar with the core concepts. If you already have via ferrata experience, the pulley and rescue content will add a layer of independence that guided activities simply do not provide.

How does this course differ from the Canyoning Autonomy Course?

The Abseil and Rescue Course for Via Ferratas is a 1-day dry-rock course: vertical technique without water, focused on ferratas and dry-wall activities. The Canyoning Autonomy Course runs over 2 days in active water canyons and adds hydrology, flow assessment and waterfall technique. They are complementary courses for different environments: one for the dry vertical world, the other for the wet world of canyons.

Will I be able to rescue a companion after the course?

The course covers basic rescue techniques for an incapacitated person on the wall and how to resolve minor incidents: how to secure a companion on ascent and descent, and how to rig a simple pulley system to haul someone who is stuck. The aim is for you to have the tools to manage tricky situations calmly. It does not replace professional guide training, but it does give you genuine autonomy to act in the most common scenarios.

Can I bring my own via ferrata gear?

Yes. If you have your own harness, descender or other technical equipment and want to learn to use it specifically, you are welcome to bring it. The guide will check it over and show you how to configure it correctly for each technique. If you do not have your own gear, everything is included in the course.
