COMBO Rafting + Canyoning: Two days of adventure in the Aragonese Pyrenees

View photos

The Aragonese Pyrenees has two faces not everyone sees together: the river rolling between the Mallos de Riglos and the canyon cutting through the conglomerate walls of Sierra de Guara. This combo brings them together in forty-eight hours.

Day one on the raft, tackling rapids as a team on the Gállego. Day two abseiling, optional jumps and natural slides in the Formiga canyon. Two disciplines, two landscapes, a beginner-level entry point designed to leave nobody out.

  • Beginner level: accessible from age 12
  • No previous experience needed — qualified guides on both activities
  • Guaranteed water flow on the Gállego (La Peña dam) and Formiga (year-round flow)

Itinerary

Day 1 — Rafting on the River Gállego

The first day starts in Murillo de Gállego, where the River Gállego runs enclosed between the vertical conglomerate formations of the Mallos de Riglos. The RocRoi team hands out the technical equipment and your guide runs a full briefing before you board the raft: paddling technique, body position and safety protocols. Once on the water, the Gállego takes the group through rapids with names of their own: the Embudo and the S hold the highest intensity of the section and turn the raft into a real team. Between rapids, the guide opens windows onto the surroundings: the geology of the gorge, the riverside wildlife, the history of the Kingdom of the Mallos. Two hours of effective rafting with griffon vultures soaring overhead.

Day 2 — Canyoning in Formiga canyon, Sierra de Guara

The second day swaps the water flowing beneath the raft for water falling between conglomerate limestone walls. Formiga canyon, in the heart of Sierra de Guara, is the most complete beginner descent in the Aragonese Pre-Pyrenees: training abseils, optional jumps of up to 6–8 metres, water-polished natural slides and swimming sections in turquoise pools, all linked together over four hours. The activity starts from the Panzano car park. The climax is the longest abseil, up to 25 metres, dropping into a deep pool. The exit from the gorge — under the vault of the Cueva de las Polvorosas — closes a descent where the group chains together, in a single outing, everything canyoning has to offer.

Note: For organisational reasons, the order of activities may vary. The team will let you know in advance.

What the experience feels like

Families: two days in which the kids discover that teamwork has immediate rewards — first on the raft, then in the canyon — surrounded by nature and with professional guides watching every detail.

Couples: measured adrenaline in the two most spectacular settings in Aragon. The bond built on day one carries straight into day two, sharing the same harness.

Groups of friends: the Embudo and the S on day one; the jumps at Formiga on day two. Two days that produce the best stories of any trip away.

Who can perform this activity

FAQs

Do I need previous experience for this combo?

No. Both rafting on the Gállego and the Formiga canyon descent are beginner-level activities. For both, the qualified guide runs a full briefing before entering the water and adapts the pace to the actual group. The only requirements are being able to swim and following the guide’s instructions.

Can the order of activities change?

Yes. For organisational reasons, the order may vary: canyoning could take place on day one and rafting on day two. The team will inform you in advance so you can plan your accommodation without surprises.

Can I do both activities in a single day?

It is not possible to combine both activities on the same day: rafting takes a total of 3 hours and canyoning 4 hours, and the meeting points are in different locations. The two-day format ensures you enjoy each activity at the right pace with the intensity it deserves.

Is water flow guaranteed on both activities?

Yes. The River Gállego is regulated by the La Peña dam, which guarantees usable flow from March to October. Formiga canyon is the only conglomerate canyon in Sierra de Guara with permanent water flow 365 days a year. No water surprises on this combo.

What happens if it rains on one of the days?

Rain does not cancel any descent: rafting is a water activity and so is canyoning. If the guide detects dangerous water levels or an electrical storm, that day is postponed with a free date change. Your safety is the absolute priority.
