Forat Negre: canyoning with a cave in the heart of the Berguedà

View photos

The Forat Negre canyon gives no warning of what is coming. Five linked abseils of 10 to 15 metres, hanging potholes carved into the walls, and — in the second half — a cave to wade through waist-deep in water. All of it in the Torrent del Coll de Fumanya, in the limestone heart of the Berguedà near Barcelona. Adventure level, from 12 years old with an adult.

  • 5 linked abseils of 10–15 m + passable cave — unique in the Berguedà
  • Hanging potholes in Cretaceous limestone at the Torrent del Coll de Fumanya
  • Qualified guides, full gear and photo report included

Itinerary de barranquismo en Barcelona

The Forat Negre canyoning experience

The activity starts in Vallcebre, a small village in the Berguedà set within the Cretaceous syncline of the Pre-Pyrenees near Barcelona. The guide team hands out the technical gear — full wetsuit, neoprene booties, helmet, canyoning harness — and explains the structure of the descent before dropping into the Torrent del Coll de Fumanya: a mixed-character canyon that alternates open sections with tight, enclosed passages where the limestone forms shapes that only patient water can carve.

The first part of the descent chains five abseils of between 10 and 15 metres. The guide anchors each one and the group makes its way down, building confidence with every drop. The hanging potholes — perfectly circular cavities drilled into the canyon wall by boulders trapped and spun by the current over thousands of years — appear halfway down the abseils like a living geology museum. There is no need to stop to look at them: they are part of the route.

The second half of the Forat Negre changes character entirely. The canyon narrows until it becomes a cave to be traversed from inside: dark passages between limestone blocks, short downclimbs and more compact abseils that add a completely different dimension to the day. Emerging from the cave, the canyon opens back up towards Vallcebre and the descent closes with the Pedraforca visible to the north on the horizon of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park.

What the experience feels like

Families: the canyon that turns 12-year-olds into explorers. The five linked abseils demand focus and the cave demands courage — two elements that make this descent something completely unlike any water park. The Forat Negre is the canyon adventurous teenagers have been waiting for.

Couples: Cretaceous limestone and a cave that no one sees from the outside. The Forat Negre combines the technique of abseiling with the exploration of an underground space that appears when you least expect it. A day in Vallcebre with no equivalent in the adventure catalogue near Barcelona.

Groups of friends: the cave is the moment the group cannot explain until they share the photos. The included photo report takes care of that.

FAQs

What exactly is the cave in the Forat Negre?

It is a natural cavity formed in the Cretaceous limestone of the Torrent del Coll de Fumanya, passable as part of the canyon descent. The group progresses through it in the water, through narrow passages, short downclimbs and small abseils. It is the defining feature of the Forat Negre: no other canyon in the area around Barcelona combines external abseils with an underground section as part of the route.

Can 12-year-olds do the descent?

Yes, from 12 years old with a responsible adult. The Forat Negre is one of the Berguedà canyons with the greatest impact on young participants: the five linked abseils, the hanging potholes and the cave create an experience that adventurous teenagers remember. The guide adapts the pace to the group and supervises every technical step.

How does the Forat Negre compare to the Empalomar Via Ferrata in Vallcebre?

The Roques de l’Empalomar Via Ferrata is a dry rock activity: you ascend using iron rungs and cables on the limestone wall, with no water involved. The Forat Negre is canyoning: you descend an active watercourse in a wetsuit with abseils. Same village of Vallcebre, same Cretaceous limestone, completely different experiences. They can be combined on two consecutive days.

What are hanging potholes?

They are perfectly circular cavities drilled into the rock wall by boulders trapped and spun by the river current over thousands of years. The erosion creates these spherical forms, which are left suspended in the wall when the watercourse drops to a lower level. In the Forat Negre they appear during the abseils, at mid-height, as geological formations accessible only from inside the canyon.

What is the best time of year to do the Forat Negre?

The season runs from spring to autumn. Spring offers higher water flow and lush vegetation. Summer is ideal for the water temperature. Autumn combines cool water and the colours of the Pre-Pyrenees. The guide confirms conditions before each activity.
