Canyoning in the Western Pyrenees: Canyon Descents in the Hecho and Ansó Valleys
View photos
The Aragonese Western Pyrenees keeps its canyons well away from the tourist circuit. The Hecho and Ansó valleys — fed by the Aragón Subordán and Veral rivers — offer descents between limestone walls, crystal-clear pools and ancient forests inside the Western Valleys Natural Park. Qualified guides, full technical gear and a setting where the bearded vulture and Pyrenean chamois are the only witnesses to your descent.
- Beginner Level: no prior experience needed, suitable from 15 years old
- Three canyons depending on season and water levels: Hospital de Siresa, Foz de Fago and Boca del Infierno
- Protected environment: Western Valleys Natural Park
📍 Meeting point: UR Pirineos Base | RocRoi — A-132, Km 38, 22808 Murillo de Gállego, Zaragoza – View on map (or directly at the canyon entrance if you are staying in Jaca, Hecho or Ansó)

What the experience feels like
Groups of friends: a technical descent in a protected natural setting where every abseil and every jump is earned together as a group.
Couples: narrow canyons, silent pools and a nature that shares no space with tourist coaches. The Western Pyrenees in its purest state.
Families with teenagers: beginner canyoning in Hecho is the first real technical experience: short abseils, optional jumps and the satisfaction of having crossed a canyon that very few people ever see from the inside.

FAQs
Is prior canyoning experience required to descend in Hecho or Ansó?
No. The beginner descents in the Hecho and Ansó valleys are designed for people with no prior technical experience. The guide explains everything you need before entering the canyon: abseil technique, position in the water and safety protocol. The only requirements are basic physical fitness and feeling comfortable in the water.
Which canyons are descended in the Hecho and Ansó area?
The canyons are selected according to the season and the day’s hydrological conditions. In spring, the usual options are Hospital de Siresa and Foz de Fago, with higher water levels and deeper pools. In summer, when the river is lower, access to the Boca del Infierno becomes possible. The guide confirms the itinerary the day before the activity.
Is canyoning in Hecho suitable for teenagers and families?
Yes, for teenagers from 15 years old. The beginner descents feature short abseils and optional jumps, making them an ideal first technical experience for young people. For children under 15, we recommend exploring other RocRoi activities in Murillo de Gállego adapted to younger ages.
Is transport to the canyon included?
No. The group travels in their own vehicle to the canyon access point, following the guide’s directions. For those already staying in the Hecho, Ansó or Jaca area, there is the option of meeting directly at the starting point without needing to pass through the Murillo de Gállego base.
What wildlife can be spotted during the descent in the Hecho and Ansó valleys?
The activity takes place inside the Western Valleys Natural Park. It is common to spot griffon vultures soaring over the cliffs and the bearded vulture — with a wingspan of nearly three metres — gliding above the canyons. The Pyrenean chamois, an endemic subspecies of the Pyrenees, may appear on the upper ledges. The presence of otters in the Aragón Subordán river is a testament to the exceptional water quality of the area.
