Itinerary

The River Cares Rafting experience

The River Cares is felt before it is navigated. It is a high-mountain river fed by snowmelt that reaches the raft cold even in May, with a channel hemmed in by limestone walls polished by thousands of years of current. It is Grade IV: the most committing rafting in northern Spain, not for contemplative outings.

The activity starts at the activity base in Unquera. The qualified guide hands out the technical gear — paddle, helmet, five-millimetre wetsuit, buoyancy aid — and runs an extensive briefing before driving the group to the put-in point. There is no room for improvisation here: coordinated paddling, the guide’s voice and the group’s response are what separate a clean run from a scare.

The descent runs through the heart of the Central Massif of the Picos de Europa, within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The channel narrows between vertical walls, the rapids come one after another and the group learns to read the water as the raft plunges into waves that crash in from every side. Griffon vultures soar above the gorge and brown trout inhabit the canyon pools.

The most memorable moment comes when the river closes in for good and the limestone walls shut around the raft like a vertical amphitheatre. It is the moment that turns the day into a memory: glacial water in the face, walls within paddle’s reach and the shared euphoria of the group emerging from the final rapid.

What the experience feels like

Families: Grade IV rafting designed for families with teenagers from age sixteen. The first time parents and children face the same water and come out with the same expression. The Cares leaves a shared memory that few getaways in the Picos de Europa can match.

Couples: shared adrenaline on the most demanding river in northern Spain. Glacial waters, vertical walls and the privilege of descending a stretch that almost nobody navigates. The shared adventure that turns a weekend into a lasting memory.

Groups of friends: celebrations, birthdays and gatherings that need more than a dinner. The Cares at Grade IV is the ultimate team test: the raft demands absolute coordination and the end of the day feels different when you have crossed a gorge together.

Who can perform this activity

FAQs

Is it really Grade IV?

Yes. The River Cares is one of the few commercial Grade IV descents in Spain. That means highly technical rapids, big waves and precise manoeuvres. The qualified guide directs every movement of the raft and group coordination is essential. This is not beginner rafting or a scenic float.

When is the best time to raft the Cares?

Spring, roughly March to May, depending on winter snowmelt and rainfall. Outside that window the flow may be insufficient and the activity is rescheduled or refunded: the quality of the experience depends on how much water is coming down the river.

Can children take part?

The minimum age is 16 with an accompanying adult and 18 unaccompanied. This is not a standard family activity: it is designed for families with teenagers or young adults with sufficient fitness and comfort in the water. For families with younger children we recommend the Aján Family Canyon (Vega de Pas), designed to introduce youngsters to canyoning.

What happens if there isn’t enough flow on the day?

Safety and experience quality come first. If river or weather conditions are not suitable, we offer a free date change or a full refund. We always confirm whether the trip is running well in advance of the booked date.

What fitness level do I need?

Good general health, upper-moderate fitness, confidence swimming and no fear of rough water. If you are unsure about your level, it is better to start with a lower-grade descent before coming to the Cares.
