The Hydrospeed experience on the Upper Ebro
Hydrospeed is discovering the river with your body. A buoyant board, fins on your feet and the Upper Ebro current pushing you along: there is no raft between you and the water. It is the descent of choice for those who already know rafting and want the next level of connection with the river — more physical, more direct and with the flow guaranteed all summer thanks to the Ebro reservoir.
The activity starts at the fully equipped base (changing rooms, showers and parking) in Arroyo. The qualified guide hands out the gear — reinforced wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid, fins and hydrospeed board — and runs a briefing on stroke technique and body position before entering the water. The basics are learnt in a few minutes: the river takes care of the rest.
The descent follows the Upper Ebro through limestone gorges, water at twenty-two degrees and rapids in sequence.
El Molino opens the day with its tight current. La Lupera demands reading the water in advance. El Ascensor surprises with its steep drop. El Gol closes the run with the most celebrated rapid on the stretch, where the full force of the river comes to the fore and the hydrospeed board proves its worth.
There are no words for the final sensation of the water. The group floats face-down in a calm pool, looks at one another and shares the euphoria of having descended the river pressed against its current — not on top, inside. Anyone who has rafted and then tries hydrospeed understands what changes: from the filter of the raft to direct contact with the water.
What the experience feels like
Families: hydrospeed accessible from age fourteen — the white-water activity that creates the strongest bond between parents and teenage children. With no raft in between, everyone descends side by side and shares the same rush coming out of the Gol rapid.
Couples: shared adrenaline without losing the connection. Each on their own board, reading the Upper Ebro rapids in unison. A couples' experience that feels different from any conventional northern rafting trip.
Groups of friends: celebrations, birthdays and getaways that need the next level of adrenaline. Hydrospeed levels the playing field — beginners and veterans share the same current — and the Upper Ebro rapids close the day with a one-of-a-kind memory in Cantabria.

FAQs
What is the difference between rafting and hydrospeed?
In rafting the group rides on a raft and paddles as a team. In hydrospeed each participant descends with their own board, fins on their feet and their body in direct contact with the water. The sensation is far more physical and individual: rafting filters the current; hydrospeed concentrates it on the body.
Is it dangerous?
It is a controlled-risk activity. The gear — reinforced wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid — and the presence of the guide ensure safety. Swimming ability is essential and the basic technique is learnt in the pre-activity briefing. The stretch has grade II and III rapids: demanding but accessible with reasonable fitness.
When is the best time?
June to September. Because the Upper Ebro flow is regulated by reservoir, river conditions are reliable all summer and the water temperature reaches 22 °C — a comfort that high-mountain rivers cannot offer.
Do I need previous experience?
No. The basic hydrospeed technique is taught in the briefing and picked up in the first few minutes of the descent. What we do ask for is reasonable fitness to kick against the current and confidence swimming.
What is the minimum age?
14 with an accompanying adult, 18 unaccompanied. It is a technical activity, not suitable for young children. For families with younger children we recommend rafting on the Ebro Canyon (Level 2 — Beginner, from age 6).
