Canyoning on the River Cicera — Technical Descent in the Desfiladero de La Hermida

Few canyons in northern Spain start without an approach. The Cicera does: it begins from the village and strings together abseils from six to twenty-five metres in the Desfiladero de La Hermida.

Three hours of continuous rope in the channel of a Deva tributary, inside the Picos de Europa. The benchmark technical descent for anyone who has already passed the beginner stage.

  • Level 3 — Adventure · from age 16 with an accompanying adult
  • Abseils from 6 to 25 metres · no approach walk

The River Cicera Canyoning experience

The Cicera is back-to-back abseiling from start to finish. Three hours in the channel with a continuous succession of waterfalls from six to twenty-five metres, all technical and all on rope. And here is what sets this canyon apart: it starts from the village. No approach, no walk-in — the rope goes up on the first obstacle and doesn't stop until the end.

The activity starts at the activity centre in La Hermida. The qualified guide hands out the gear — full wetsuit, helmet, harness, neoprene shoes — and delivers a thorough technical briefing: abseil position, braking and vertical exit. The rope technique is reviewed before the first obstacle and applied again and again throughout the descent.

The route follows the Cicera channel, a Deva tributary, inside the Desfiladero de La Hermida on the Cantabrian side of the Picos de Europa. Grey limestone defines the canyon: narrow, vertical, with a vegetation-rich channel. The abseils come without pause — six, eight, twelve, fifteen, up to twenty-five metres — a technical progression that demands constant attention and agility.

And at the end, the longest abseil of the route: twenty-five metres of free-hanging rope with the limestone wall at your back and the water falling alongside. It is the abseil that sets the Cicera apart from any family descent — the one that defines the canyon.

What the experience feels like

Couples: three hours of rope, vertical walls and a descent you won't forget. The Cicera is the canyon couples choose when they have moved on from the playful descents and want the technical version.

Groups of friends: celebrations, birthdays and events that deserve a canyon with real rope. The continuous succession of abseils makes the Cicera the plan the group can't stop talking about on the way home.

FAQs

What sets the Cicera apart from other canyons?

It is more technical and vertical, with more abseils than the Navedo stretch. Abseils range from six to twenty-five metres and come without pause. And unlike most canyons, the Cicera has no approach walk: it starts directly from the village.

Do I need to know how to abseil?

The qualified guide teaches the technique before the first obstacle and supervises every abseil. What we do ask is that you are comfortable with heights and agile: there are vertical sections on rope throughout the descent.

What is the best footwear?

Trainers with good grip or walking boots. Never sandals or flip-flops. It is vital that they hold the foot securely.

Will I get cold in the water?

No. We provide a full wetsuit and neoprene shoes for thermal comfort. We also recommend a dry change of clothes for the end of the descent.
