The Family Canyoning experience on the Aján river

The Aján Family is the first time in a canyon for many children. A sandstone riverbed with crystal-clear water in the upper stretch of the river, in the heart of the Vega de Pas. No abseils, no demanding passages. The obstacles become games: polished rock slides, small optional jumps into pools of pure water and stretches of wading through the current.

The activity starts at the activity centre in Vega de Pas. The licensed guide hands out the equipment — full wetsuit, helmet, neoprene shoes — and gives a calm briefing adapted to children from five years old. The key word of the descent is ‘optional’: every jump and every slide is the participant’s own choice.

The descent covers the upper stretch of the Aján, within the Vega de Pas valleys. The sandstone riverbed carries the group from obstacle to obstacle: natural slides, small jumps into crystal-clear pools and wading sections. And the landscape adds the context few family outings can offer: a glacial pastoral mountain valley dotted with the traditional pasiega huts characteristic of the region.

And at the end, there is no big final obstacle. It is the look on the child’s face when they realise they have just descended an entire canyon. And the look on the parent’s face when they understand that the confidence their child just earned will last far longer than the drive home.
