Canoraft on the River Gállego: You at the Controls Beneath the Mallos de Riglos, Murillo de Gállego

In conventional rafting, the guide decides. In the canoraft, you decide. The hard-hulled two-person craft combines a canoe's stability with the ability to tackle class III rapids: you and your partner are the team, the instructor guides from the water and the Mallos de Riglos are the stage where every manoeuvre counts.

An experience for couples and groups seeking river adrenaline with real autonomy over the craft.

  • Adventure level: class III rapids, sustained physical effort, from age 15
  • Two-person canoraft: real autonomy — you steer through the rapids
  • Setting: River Gállego and the Mallos de Riglos with their griffon vulture colony

The Canoraft experience on the River Gállego

The activity starts at the UR Pirineos I RocRoi base with the instructor's briefing: paired paddle technique, communication between the two crew, reading the current and protocol for the class III rapids.

The canoraft does not forgive lack of coordination: if both paddle in different directions, the craft loses its line. The instructor explains it clearly and practises in calm water before entering the technical stretch. Transport takes the group to the put-in point.

The River Gállego on the Murillo stretch alternates emerald pools with foamy rapids hemmed in by rock boulders. The canorafts descend with the instructor, who marks the water lines and supervises each rapid from their own craft. El Embudo — the grade III–IV rapid on the stretch — is not run for safety reasons. But the next rapid, Las Gradas, is. Those who execute it well emerge from the pool below with adrenaline at full tilt.

Above the conglomerate walls of the Mallos de Riglos, griffon vultures glide with the indifference of those who have occupied the same lookout for millennia.

On finishing at Murillo de Gállego beach, return transport to the base closes the day with changing rooms and showers available for the group.

What the experience feels like

Couples: the canoraft is the Gállego's most honest team test. If you paddle in sync, the rapid rewards you. If not, the river lets you know. The Mallos de Riglos witness the best or worst moment of coordination in your history together.

Groups of friends: several canorafts, the same river and the unspoken competition over who takes the best line through El Embudo. The adventure level is not marketing: class III rapids demand focus and reward with real adrenaline.

FAQs

Is it very difficult to steer the canoraft with no experience?

Not difficult, but it does require communication. Unlike rafting, here both crew steer. Before entering the rapids the instructor practises with the group in calm water until coordination flows naturally. The learning curve is quick and is part of the experience.

How does the canoraft differ from raft-based rafting?

In rafting the guide steers and the group follows. In the canoraft the two-person crew makes the decisions: which water line to take, when to accelerate and how to enter the rapid. There is more autonomy, more technical involvement and a direct connection with the river that the rafting raft does not offer.

Who is the canoraft for?

Couples or groups with a taste for real adventure and willingness to learn something technical in the process. No prior canoeing experience is needed, but an active attitude, comfort in the water and the ability to coordinate with a partner under pressure are. The level is Adventure: class III rapids are real.

Are the Gállego rapids dangerous for a canoraft beginner?

The Murillo de Gállego stretch includes class II–III rapids. They are technical and demand attention, but the instructor supervises every rapid and adapts the route to the group's level. The technical gear — wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid — is designed to ensure safety even in a capsize.

Are transport and showers included?

Yes. Transport from the UR Pirineos I RocRoi base to the put-in and the return are included. The base changing rooms with showers are available at the end of the activity.
