Hydrospeed on the Ésera River – Benasque, Huesca

Hydrospeed does not promise comfort. It promises intensity. The board is a two-kilogram plastic float at the mercy of the river. The fins are the engine. The wetsuit is full because the Maladeta Massif meltwater touches everything that moves. The certified multilingual guide accompanies the group but each rider descends alone, feeling the full volume of the Ésera with every kick.

This is different from rafting and from kayaking. In rafting, the group absorbs the current. In a kayak, the craft protects you. Here, you are the vehicle and the water is the road.

  • Level 3: Adventure — from age 14 with a companion
  • 2h30 real time on the river — 3h30 total duration
  • Individual: each participant their own board, their own rhythm, their own experience of the water

The experience – Hydrospeed on the Ésera

The group arrives in Campo and receives full wetsuit, fins, helmet and hydrospeed board. The briefing is technical: position on the board, fin technique, what to do at the drops. The certified multilingual guide runs the first stretch with the group so that each rider feels the current, understands the rhythm and feels secure inside the water.

Then everyone descends together but alone. Each board is an independent unit floating on the Ésera. The constant kicking is the engine. The water is everywhere — ice cold, impactful, real. The class III rapids bring limestone drops that the board hits without absorbing. The current pushes directly against the body.

There is a moment in the descent where the river opens a narrow passage between two stone walls and the current multiplies. This is where each rider passes through a state of sensory solitude — kicking to maintain control, the full volume of the river in direct contact with the wetsuit. The stretch ends when the current opens out and the river becomes navigable again without pure combat. The legs are tired from kicking. The adrenaline slowly subsides.

What the experience feels like

Groups of friends: everyone descends at their own pace but together. The internal competition is automatic. The solidarity when you reach the end is too.

Couples: an extreme experience shared but lived in tactile solitude. When it is over, the silence after the adrenaline is deeper than any conversation.

FAQs

Is special fitness required?

Yes. The engine of hydrospeed is your legs. Sustained kicking for two and a half hours is what maintains control and rhythm in the water. You need leg endurance, anaerobic capacity and overall fitness that allows you to repeat the effort throughout the activity. Being able to swim is not enough — you need to swim hard.

Will I be cold?

The Maladeta Massif water is meltwater — always cold. We provide a full wetsuit — a 5 mm one-piece — plus neoprene boots that cover the whole body. The buoyancy aid provides additional warmth on the torso. Even so, the sensation is one of direct contact with cold water. That is part of the experience.

What is the difference between hydrospeed and advanced rafting?

In advanced rafting, you are in a group raft facing class III–IV rapids with group coordination. The group absorbs the current. In hydrospeed, you are alone on a board, the water hits you directly, and your fins are your only control. It is individuality versus group coordination.

What is the difference from open kayak?

In open kayak, you are in a craft on top of the water, with a paddle, with designed manoeuvrability and stability. In hydrospeed, you are in the water, the board is minimal, your fins are the engine and the sensation is one of complete exposure to the current.

From what age can you do hydrospeed?

From age 14 with a responsible adult. Without a companion, the minimum age is 18. Physical fitness is the determining factor: participants must have real leg endurance and feel comfortable in turbulent water before attempting it.
