Sorrosal Canyon in Broto: abseil the most iconic waterfall in Ordesa National Park

View photos

The Sorrosal waterfall has been falling beside Broto for thousands of years. The whole village sees it every day from the road. Few people know you can descend it from the inside. The Sorrosal Canyon is the descent that ends where the waterfall visible from the village begins: fifteen to twenty abseils through glacial flysch with moss and jungle-like vegetation, a natural-cathedral atmosphere and a final 30-metre drop that puts Broto at the group's feet.

  • Adventure level: 15-20 abseils on glacial flysch, sustained physical effort
  • Sorrosal waterfall: the 30-metre abseil visible from the village of Broto
  • Licensed guide and transport included

Itinerary

The Sorrosal Canyon experience, Broto

The briefing takes place at the Sorrosal Waterfall Municipal Car Park in Broto, with the waterfall visible above the group before entering the canyon.

The licensed guide hands out the technical gear — 5 mm wetsuit, harness, helmet, descender and wetsuit shoes — and explains the abseil technique on wet rock, how to handle the rope on mossy flysch and the safety protocol for hanging abseils. Transport back from the end of the descent is included.

The Sorrosal Canyon descends through glacial-origin flysch with wild riverside vegetation — mosses, ferns and lichens covering the sandstone walls — that creates the atmosphere of a living, humid canyon. The rock is polished by decades of snowmelt water. The fifteen to twenty abseils succeed one another with increasing intensity over the 300-metre descent. Some are hanging abseils over the void; others pass through active waterfalls where the water strikes the helmet during descent.

The climax comes at the end. The canyon opens onto the Sorrosal waterfall: thirty metres of free fall that the group has been looking at from the road for years without knowing they could abseil it. The view of Broto from the lip of the waterfall — the village, the Ara valley, the National Park peaks in the background — is the image that closes the flagship product of the Ordesa ecosystem.

FAQs

What sets the Sorrosal Canyon apart from other advanced canyons in Ordesa?

The Sorrosal’s defining feature is the final waterfall: thirty metres of abseiling down the Sorrosal waterfall, visible from the Broto road, closing the descent with the most recognisable image in the ecosystem. The Ordiso Canyon has an alpine character with granite and snowmelt in the Bujaruelo valley — a radically different environment.

Is the Sorrosal Canyon the same as the Sorrosal Via Ferrata?

No. They share the name because both take place on the same Sorrosal massif beside Broto, but they are completely different activities. The Sorrosal Via Ferrata is dry climbing up the wall on fixed equipment, with no water or waterfall abseiling. The Sorrosal Canyon is a complete canyoning descent through the active gorge.

What does it mean that the flysch is of glacial origin?

The Sorrosal flysch was deposited during the Eocene and subsequently shaped by the Quaternary glaciers that occupied the Ara valley until thousands of years ago. Glacial meltwater carved the present canyon and polished the rock. Snowmelt continues to shape the canyon every spring, keeping the rock clean and the waterfalls active well into summer.

Does the included transport cover the full journey?

The included transport covers the return from the end of the descent to the meeting point at the Parking Municipal Cascada del Sorrosal, Broto. Travel from home to Broto is not included.

Can the Sorrosal Canyon be done without any prior canyoning experience?

Yes, but good physical fitness and comfort in wet and vertical environments are recommended. The guide explains technique before entering. Those who want a shorter, more accessible first experience can start with the Furco Canyon or the Sorrosal Via Ferrata.
