FAQs
What is calcareous tufa and why does it make the Viandico Canyon special?
Calcareous tufa is a porous sedimentary rock formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from water onto plants and moss over thousands of years. It creates spongy ochre-and-white formations that act as natural dams and form the Viandico’s characteristic pools. Unlike flysch or granite, tufa is softer and more porous, giving the canyon a visual and tactile texture completely different from the rest of the ecosystem.
Why is the Viandico Canyon the warmest of the Ordesa canyons?
Because of its south-facing orientation in the Añisclo Canyon, the warmest valley in the National Park with an exceptional sub-Mediterranean microclimate for its altitude. The tufa pools receive direct sunlight for hours and retain the heat.
Does the Añisclo Canyon require a ticket or booking to access?
The sector of the Añisclo Canyon where the Viandico Canyon takes place, accessed from Nerín/Tella, does not require a booked ticket in normal season. Access to the interior of the Añisclo Canyon via the valley floor may have regulation in high season.
How does the Viandico differ from the Gloces Gorge, both being beginner level?
They are completely opposite in character. The Viandico is luminous, sunny, warm and open in the Añisclo Canyon. The Gloces are dark, cool, narrow and shadowy near Fanlo.
Can you make jumps into the water in the Viandico Canyon?
The Viandico’s tufa pools allow optional jumps at the points the instructor indicates. Jumps are not compulsory: each participant decides. The depth and safety of the pools suitable for jumping are checked by the instructor before each attempt.
