The Cueva de las Maravillas caving experience

Caving in the Cueva de las Maravillas unfolds by head-torch light. The cave sits within the karst formations of Venta del Moro, near the Hoces del Cabriel, and is explored like a natural labyrinth: you have to crouch, observe and touch the damp rock. It is not a museum corridor. It is a beginner route.

The activity starts at the Albergue Hoces del Cabriel in Venta del Moro. The team hands out a high-power head torch helmet and, where the cave requires it, protective overalls. The qualified guide gives a clear briefing before heading underground: how to move through narrow passages, how to angle your light to avoid blinding the person ahead, and what to touch and what to leave alone.

Once inside, the cave imposes its own climate: constant temperature, high humidity and silence. The route moves through limestone galleries, stalactites hanging at helmet height, stalagmites that took millennia to form and tufa formations. Some stretches require crouching. Others open into chambers where the walls recede in every direction.

The climax comes in one of the cathedral chambers: the head torch reaches the ceiling and the true scale is revealed. Turning off the light for a moment is optional. The guides, who know every crack of the Cueva de las Maravillas, choose the moment. And yes, you will come out with mud on your overalls. That is the sign you genuinely enjoyed it.

Is it dangerous if I have claustrophobia?

The Cueva de las Maravillas is a beginner route with mostly spacious chambers, but it also passes through narrower stretches where you need to crouch. If claustrophobia is severe, this activity is not recommended. If it is moderate, let us know in advance and the qualified guide will adapt the pace and stay close to you.

From what age can children take part?

From age 8 with an adult. It is a highly visual and safe activity for young participants: discovering stalactites, stalagmites and cathedral-like chambers by head-torch light almost always feels like an explorer’s expedition.

Are there bats in the cave?

Bats are the cave’s natural inhabitants and can be seen hanging from the ceiling, especially in the higher sections. They are harmless and their space is respected throughout the route. The guide points out where they are and explains their ecological role.
