Sant Pere Canyon in the heart of the Congost de Collegats

The Sant Pere Canyon descent begins under a rock overhang: the ruins of the Monastery of Sant Pere de les Maleses, tucked into the wall of the Congost de Collegats, greet the group before anyone steps into the water. It is the only canyon in the Pallars Sobirà that opens with Romanesque heritage, and one of the few Pyrenean descents where rock, water and history can be read simultaneously.

The day begins at the RocRoi base in Llavorsí. The licensed guide hands out the two-piece wetsuit, helmet, harness and wetsuit shoes and explains abseiling technique on dry land before anyone touches the rope. The transfer to the entry point is in your own vehicle following the guide’s car (40 minutes), and the approach on foot to the monastery ruins takes one hour: just enough time for the surroundings to start doing their part.

Once in the watercourse, the first major obstacle is the 6-metre Natural Slide, the longest of the route, with an alternative abseil installation if the flow or the group require it. Next come the Conglomerate Corridors, where the walls narrow and the canyon becomes more aesthetic: steps, downclimbs and optional jumps into pools mark the progression. The conglomerate rock changes colour with the light and invites the eye upwards between abseils.

The highlight is the Cave Abseil: a vertical drop of up to 10 metres ending in a pool enclosed under the rock, with the feeling of being inside a cavern. From there the gorge opens into the Bridge Stretch — the modern C-13 bridge above and, hidden in the vegetation, the old stone arch bridge — and finishes with the Chain Passage, the final section equipped with metal rungs that returns the group to the road verge. Back to base in Llavorsí and a hot shower.

What the experience feels like

Families: children from 8 years with an adult enter canyoning through a route with a slide, narrow corridors and a Romanesque monastery literally inside the canyon. The Cave Abseil is the first big abseil for many teenagers.

Couples: an aesthetic descent in the Congost de Collegats with a heritage anchor no other Pallars canyon has: the ruins of Sant Pere de les Maleses. The 10 m vertical abseil inside a cave-pool closes the day with an image all of its own.

Groups of friends: 6-metre slide, optional jumps into pools, Conglomerate Corridors and the Cave Abseil. The natural step after the Berros: no longer the first time, now it is time for verticality.

FAQs

What makes the Sant Pere Canyon special?

It is the only canyon in the Pallars Sobirà that begins beneath the ruins of a Romanesque monastery — the Monastery of Sant Pere de les Maleses, tucked into a rock overhang in the Congost de Collegats. It combines the 6-metre Slide, the Conglomerate Corridors and the Cave Abseil (10 m dropping into a cavern-style pool) in a single 2 h 30 min descent.

What is the difficulty level of the Sant Pere?

Beginner-to-intermediate. It is not the first recommended canyon if you have never done one before: the height of the main abseil (up to 10 m) and the length of the route require good physical fitness and no vertigo. It is the ideal step after a beginner canyon like the Berros, when you want to experience the sensation of a major vertical abseil in the Pyrenees.

Is swimming ability required for the Sant Pere?

Yes, it is essential. Although there are no long swimming sections, there are pools where the water is over your head and you need to move confidently in the water. The two-piece wetsuit helps with buoyancy, but safety begins with feeling comfortable in an aquatic environment.

What equipment does RocRoi provide and what should I bring?

RocRoi provides all the technical equipment: two-piece wetsuit, wetsuit shoes, CE-certified helmet and harness rigged for abseiling. You only need to bring swimwear, a lycra or thermal underlayer and sports footwear with a good sole and laces that can get wet (no flip-flops or open shoes). Also water, sun cream, towel and a change of clothes.

How do I get to the Sant Pere entry point?

The meeting point is the RocRoi base in Llavorsí (Hort de Rei s/n, C-13 km 140). From there the group travels by own vehicle following the guide’s car for 40 minutes, then makes a one-hour approach on foot to the monastery ruins, which is the canyon entry point. Transport is not included; if you do not have a vehicle, please contact the company before booking.
