Itinerary

The Ordiso Canyon experience, Bujaruelo

The briefing takes place at the San Nicolás de Bujaruelo car park, beside the medieval arch that has bridged the Río Ara for eight centuries. The licensed guide hands out the equipment and briefs the group on the canyon’s character: granite, snowmelt water at six degrees in July, polished and slippery rock requiring precise footing at every step. The wetsuit is essential throughout the entire descent.

The Ordiso Canyon climbs through alpine meadows with views of the Tres Sorores peaks before entering the gorge. The rock is Palaeozoic granite — grey, with crystals visible to the naked eye — with intrusions of slate and metamorphic rock that change footwear grip every hundred metres.

The eight to twelve abseils of the descent reach twenty metres on the main passages and run between granite walls polished by centuries of snowmelt. The alpine meadows surrounding the canyon are habitat for Pyrenean chamois. Sightings on the rocky ledges above the gorge are common, especially in the early morning hours. The bearded vulture regularly soars over the Ara valley throughout the descent.

The Ordiso Canyon ends at the Río Ara, beside the Bujaruelo campsite, with the National Park peaks as backdrop.

What the experience feels like

Groups of friends: the Ordiso is the canyon for those who have already done canyoning and want something completely different: granite, ice-cold water and an alpine environment no other canyon in the area can offer.

Couples: six hours in the Bujaruelo valley with Palaeozoic granite, chamois on the ledges and the medieval bridge of San Nicolás on arrival. The most remote and authentic adventure canyoning in Ordesa.

FAQs

Why is the Ordiso Canyon different from other Ordesa canyons?

The geology. While the Sorrosal, Furco and Forcos descend through flysch, and the Gloces and Viandico through limestone, the Ordiso is carved into 300-million-year-old Palaeozoic granite. Granite completely changes the rock texture, water temperature, landscape and progression technique.

What is the Bridge of San Nicolás de Bujaruelo?

It is an 11th-to-12th-century stone arch over the Río Ara, part of the Aragonese branch of the Camino de Santiago that crossed the Pyrenees via the Puerto de Bujaruelo into France. It is one of the best-preserved medieval bridges in the Pyrenees and the meeting and return point for the Ordiso Canyon.

Is 6°C water dangerous?

With the correct equipment — full wetsuit plus thermal underlayer — the water temperature is perfectly manageable. The real risk is not wearing the thermal inner layer and being exposed to cold water for four hours. The guide checks equipment before entering the canyon.

Can Pyrenean chamois be seen in the Ordiso Canyon?

Yes. The alpine meadows of the Bujaruelo valley are confirmed Pyrenean chamois habitat. Sightings on the rocky ledges above the gorge are common, especially between 7 and 9 in the morning.

Is prior canyoning experience required?

Yes, prior canyoning experience or technical mountain activity experience is recommended. This is not a descent for beginners: the combination of polished granite, cold water and sustained effort requires confidence in vertical canyons.
