FAQs
Why is the Ordiso Canyon different from other Ordesa canyons?
The geology. While the Sorrosal, Furco and Forcos descend through flysch, and the Gloces and Viandico through limestone, the Ordiso is carved into 300-million-year-old Palaeozoic granite. Granite completely changes the rock texture, water temperature, landscape and progression technique.
What is the Bridge of San Nicolás de Bujaruelo?
It is an 11th-to-12th-century stone arch over the Río Ara, part of the Aragonese branch of the Camino de Santiago that crossed the Pyrenees via the Puerto de Bujaruelo into France. It is one of the best-preserved medieval bridges in the Pyrenees and the meeting and return point for the Ordiso Canyon.
Is 6°C water dangerous?
With the correct equipment — full wetsuit plus thermal underlayer — the water temperature is perfectly manageable. The real risk is not wearing the thermal inner layer and being exposed to cold water for four hours. The guide checks equipment before entering the canyon.
Can Pyrenean chamois be seen in the Ordiso Canyon?
Yes. The alpine meadows of the Bujaruelo valley are confirmed Pyrenean chamois habitat. Sightings on the rocky ledges above the gorge are common, especially between 7 and 9 in the morning.
Is prior canyoning experience required?
Yes, prior canyoning experience or technical mountain activity experience is recommended. This is not a descent for beginners: the combination of polished granite, cold water and sustained effort requires confidence in vertical canyons.
