The experience — Kayak and wine at the heart of the Ebro

The kayak on the River Ebro begins before you enter the water. At the Benifallet activity base, the team hands out equipment, runs through the paddle stroke and reviews the protocols while the Templar Castle of Miravet already waits on the horizon. You board the vehicle, head upstream, and when your feet touch the river for the first time, the castle is right above you, planted on its rock as it has been for eight centuries.

The first metres are a rhythm adjustment. The Ebro’s current pushes without demanding, and the guide leads the way between poplars and tamarisks that form a corridor of almost untouched riverside vegetation. Soon the Pas de Barrufemes appears: the rock walls close in on both sides and the river changes scale. It is no longer just a watercourse — it is a gorge. Here the kayak moves on its own and the only sound competing with the water is the straight flight of the kingfisher crossing from bank to bank.

The arrival in Benifallet closes the river section with the same calm with which it began. Twelve kilometres later, the group moors on the banks of one of the best-preserved villages in the Baix Ebre, at the heart of the Terres de l’Ebre Biosphere Reserve. But the day is not over.

From Benifallet, transport takes the group to Pinell de Brai, where the Cathedral of Wine receives you. The building, designed by Cèsar Martinell — a disciple of Gaudí — was built in 1919 for the local wine cooperative and is today one of the icons of Catalan Modernisme. The DOP Terra Alta wine tasting is the perfect finale: white and red Grenache wines in a space that seems designed to make time stand still.

The kayak activity is available from age 3 with an accompanying adult. The wine tasting is designed for adults. If you are coming with young children, we recommend mentioning this at the time of booking so the experience can be adjusted.
