Fornocal Canyon: technical 5h30 descent in the eastern Sierra de Guara
View photos
The Fornocal is not a canyon to start with. It is the next step: chained abseils, passages of red conglomerate and the feeling of being in a corner of the Parque Natural de la Sierra y Cañones de Guara that almost no one reaches. Five and a half hours of continuous descent, with a licensed guide and careful logistics so that the only variable is enjoying the canyon.
Real isolation, ochre walls and a technical pace that sets it apart from beginner descents.
- Adventure level: for canyoneers with prior experience
- 5h30 descent in the eastern sector of the park
- Technical abseils in a red conglomerate gorge

What the experience feels like
Families: for families with children from age 12 who have already completed a beginner canyon. The Fornocal is the natural next step, with a technical level that teenagers experience as real adventure and adults as a discovery of the eastern sector.
Couples: 5h30 shared in a canyon with no queue and no group behind you. The red conglomerate passages create a shared backdrop that neither of you forgets — an intensity different from the adrenaline of Guara’s more frequented canyons.
Groups of friends: chained abseils, personal technique and the quiet satisfaction of having descended the least crowded canyon in the eastern sector. The plan for the group that already knows canyoning and is looking for something most people have not done.

FAQs
Is the Fornocal technically difficult?
It is intermediate level: it requires agility and stamina for 5h30 of activity, with chained abseils as the main technical element. It is not a canyon for a first descent, but it is manageable with a licensed guide for anyone who has already completed at least one beginner initiation.
Are there many jumps in the Fornocal?
No. The Fornocal is a technical ropes-and-abseils canyon rather than a constant-jumps one. Those looking for continuous jumps will fit better in the Formiga or the Peonera. Those looking for isolation, red conglomerate passages and rope progression will find what they want in the Fornocal.
Does the Fornocal have water all year round?
No. It is a seasonal canyon. Its best season is spring or immediately after rainfall; in a dry midsummer the flow can drop significantly. The RocRoi team confirms actual conditions a few days before the activity.
What is the difference between the Fornocal and the Formiga?
The Formiga is beginner level: 4h, short abseils, jumps and natural slides, year-round flow. The Fornocal is intermediate: 5h30, chained abseils, narrow red gorge, seasonal and isolated. Formiga is the first time in Guara; Fornocal is the next step for those who have already tried.
Does it include transport to the start of the canyon?
Yes. The meeting point is set to organise the car logistics the Fornocal requires (start and exit do not coincide). The guide team coordinates the vehicle transfer as part of the service.
