From next June 29 to July 6 you have an appointment in Sort (Pallars Sobirà, Lleida) with the World Freestyle Kayak that Roc Roi organizes together with the Town Hall of Sort.
It is the first time in all history that this championship takes place in Sort, for junior and senior categories. Sort is the home of the world’s first freestyle kayak stadium, which will give athletes and spectators an experience they have never seen before. The great athletes who participated in the last championship in San Juan (Argentina) in 2017, come back with new techniques and eager to give a show!
The first world championship in Sort
This is the first time this championship has been held in Sort, but it is not the first time that this type of event has been organized, since previously, the first competitions were held here and the first European Cup was organized (1999), first World Championship (2001) and two World Cups (2014 and 2018). In 2006 the modality ‘freestyle kayak’ was officially recognized by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) and entered into its sports program.
For the World Cup, the Camp de Regataes l’Aigüerola will inaugurate the freestyle stadium, a “legacy” that, according to Raimon Monterde, mayor of Sort, will favor “the arrival of athletes who will give life to the municipality and, in addition, avoid the depopulation of our regions”
The objective of ICF Freestyle Committee is to promote this sport around the world and that is why this year Sort has been the chosen venue.
The best athletes of the discipline will be in Sort
The British international Claire O’Hara, the best athlete of the category with 8 championships and the local athlete Kira Carreto, one of the youngest participants with only 18 years, are some of the athletes that you will see in action the next June 29 in Sort.
Some of them are Olympic athletes who will participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and this is the perfect championship to achieve their goals or improve them according to the scores they obtain.
Roc Roi, organizer and planner
We thank the ICF Freestyle Committee for the trust placed in Roc Roi and the City Council of Sort for the organization of the most important event in the capital this year.
